NMC approval to Goa Medical College: MBBS seats increased to 200, 17 more PG medical seats in 5 specialities
Panaji: Bringing good news to the undergraduate and postgraduate medical aspirants in Goa, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted its permission to increase MBBS seats to 200 at Goa Medical College for the academic year 2024-2025.
Apart from this, the GMC has also received the Commission's approval for an increase of 17 postgraduate medical seats. This includes an increase of MD Radiodiagnosis seats from six to seven, MS General Surgery seats from six to 15, an increase of MS Obstetrics and Gynaecology seats from six to eight, MD Pharmacoloy seats from four to six and MD Paediatrics seats from seven to 10.
One of the oldest medical institutes in the country, Goa Medical College (GMC) was established back in 1691. It is run by the government and an organic institute of Goa University. Previously, the college had 180 MBBS seats available for admission.
In 2019, 30 MBBS seats were added to the seat matrix of the medical college for the students belonging to the reserved category of economically weaker section (EWS).

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that GMC was planning to increase around 70 MBBS seats at the institute, thereby taking the total number of MBBS seats from 180 to 250. Further, the college was also planning to add new MD/MS and super-speciality courses in MCh pediatric surgery, hand surgery, and DM neurology.
Further, the institute was planning to offer speciality course in DM medical oncology and it also was planning to increase PG medical seats in department of surgery, anesthesiology and psychiatry.
Other plans of the institute was to commence new PG medical courses in emergency medicine, critical medicine, and physical medicine and rehabilitation etc.
Now NMC has granted its nod for an increase of MBBS seats to 200. Recently, the Apex Medical Commission granted its permission to increase 20 MBBS seats at Goa Medical College, Panaji. NMC has also granted its nod for increasing 17 postgraduate medical seats at the institute.
Referring to the increase of MBBS and PG medical seats, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told the Times of India, "This expansion marks a significant step towards enhancing the capacity of our institution and allowing more students to pursue their aspirations of becoming skilled medical professionals."
"These increases in seat capacity reflect our ongoing commitment to fostering medical excellence and addressing the growing healthcare needs in the region and beyond. Goa Medical College remains dedicated to nurturing the next generation of medical professionals while providing cutting-edge medical education," he added.
