Srinagar: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar has recently been granted approval by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for two MCh seats in the Department of Neurosurgery.
This decision marks the first-ever approval for an M.Ch Neurosurgery program in any medical college across Jammu and Kashmir, according to Daily Excelsior
With the recent approval of two MCh Neurosurgery seats, the total number of super-speciality seats (DM and M.Ch) at GMC Srinagar has now risen to 16, thereby further strengthening advanced medical training and healthcare services in the region.
This approval marks another milestone in the continuous expansion of super-speciality medical education at Government Medical College, Srinagar.
According to the DailyExcelsior media news report, he journey towards strengthening super-specialty training at the institution began in 2021 with the introduction of two M.Ch seats in Urology. Subsequently, the college secured approvals for two DM seats in Neurology, followed by the addition of two seats each in DM Medical Gastroenterology, DM Cardiology, and DM Pulmonary Medicine. The institution also received approval for two M.Ch seats in Pediatric Surgery, along with two additional seats in Urology approved by the NMC in February 2026.
Meanwhile, at the undergraduate level, the number of MBBS seats has increased from 180 to 200 for the 2025–2026 session. The number of postgraduate (MD/MS) seats has risen from 259 to 277 for the 2025–2026 session.
