Kochi: Kerala based Ernakulam Medical College has now landed in a controversy after it denied appointing the foreign medical graduates in the post of junior residents in the institute.

Although the notification dated 28.02.2022 had clearly mentioned that the opportunity was limited to Indian Nationals graduated from Indian Universities, the Principal has now termed it to be an error on the part of the staff.

Meanwhile, the issue came up before the Kerala High Court, which has directed not to take any decision based on that interview.

The issue came to light after in a notification, the college mentioned, "A Walk in Interview for the selection to the post of Junior resident in the Govt Medical College, Ernakulam for various Departments on contract basis is scheduled to be held at 11 AM on 04.03.2022 in the Administrative Block of this Medical College."

As per the notice, the qualification required for application in this post was MBBS/TCMC Registration.

However, the notice also mentioned that the opportunity was "Limited to applicants of Indian Nationals graduated from Indian Universities."

As soon as the notification was out, medical students who have graduated from abroad along with their parents started protesting against it.

In fact, the Association of MD Physicians has filed a writ petition before the Kerala High Court regarding the matter and challenged the interview conducted by the Government Medical College, Ernakulam.

The association mentioned in its Twitter handle that the HC judge has orally instructed not to take any decision based on the interview conducted on March 4 and posted the matter for further hearing on 07.03.2022.

Meanwhile, the Principal of the institute has claimed it to be a clerical error and informed Kerala Kaumudi that foreign medical graduates were not excluded from appointments.

"A clerical error occurred while mentioning the requirement that the applicants must be registered with the Medical Council of India. Those with registration will be considered," he told the daily.

However, this controversy has once again highlighted the issue of alleged discrimination that the foreign medical graduates face in this country.

As per the rules, the FMGs need to clear the mandatory Foreign Medical Graduate Examination and undergo CRRI in order to get registered as a doctor in India.
