Shillong Medical College awaits NMC inspection
Shillong: The Meghalaya government is awaiting inspection by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start the Shillong Medical College this academic year.
Replying to a query raised by the leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Manda Sangma during the Question Hour during the budget session, Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh said, “All the preparing steps underway to start the first batch during this academic year, subject to the approval of NMC.”
However, the leader of the opposition said that there was no clarity on the actual status of the project despite the government’s intention to start the academic session this year.
But Lyngdoh defended and said the Health and Family Welfare department is on the job to operationalise the Shillong Medical College.
“We have completed affiliation with the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). The Pasteur Hills have been converted into an academic block (of the Shillong Medical College),” the minister informed.
“It is a brownfield project, we are not required to institute a new hospital as we are looking at the available infrastructures and we are looking at manpower already available. We are looking as to when NMC is coming for inspection,” Lyngdoh added.
last year the Medical Dialogues reported that in a review meeting chaired by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on institutionalising medical colleges in Meghalaya, state Health Minister Ampreen Lyngdoh confirmed that the Shillong Medical College is likely to be made functional by September 2025 and Tura Medical College by 2026-2027.
