Soon: New Medical college to come up in Karaikal
Puducherry: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Puducherry, a new government medical college and hospital is going to come up in the Karaikal district of the Union Territory.
The medical college is going to be constructed at a cost of Rs 850 crore and recently the consultant on the project, the National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC) has presented the layout of the project to a team led by Chief Minister N Rangasamy.
Already a model has been selected and now NBCC will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and submit it to the UT Government. Following this, the UT will forward the proposal to the Union Government for approval and funds, official sources informed TNIE.
PWD minister K Lakshminarayanan, Secretary to Government (Health) C Udayakumar, District Collector E Vallavan, Director of health department Dr G Sriramulu, Chief Engineer (PWD) V Sathyamurthy, and medical officers were present.
As per the latest media report by The Hindu, the CM had announced his decision of setting up a government medical college in the enclave. According to the plans of the Government, a 600-bedded hospital will come up at a cost of Rs 800 crores and around 150 MBBS students could be admitted for the medical courses at the medical college.
The New Indian Express adds that the government medical college at Karaikal has been initiated under the Health Ministry scheme of One District, One Medical College.
According to the data shared by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, Puducherry has altogether 9 medical colleges with an intake capacity of 1630 MBBS seats.
Among these 380 MBBS seats are available for students at two government medical colleges and another 1250 MBBS seats are available at 7 private medical colleges.
TNIE adds that CM Rangasamy recently inaugurated a new dialysis unit at ndira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI). It has been funded by the health department and the CSR initiative of pharma company Solara, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, chemical manufacturing company Chemfab Alkalis Limited, and Inox Air Products Limited, a manufacturer of industrial and medical gases Director of IGMCRI Dr C Udhayshankar informed the daily that the new unit is capable of providing dialysis to 14 patients in two shifts free of charge.
