Three medical, health universities declared FAKE by UGC, warns students not to take admission
New Delhi: An initiative to prevent students from taking admission in a fake universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently named 21 such institutions at its website that are fake.
The list of 21 fake institution also contains 3 names that claim to be medical/health universities but are nowhere authorized by the regulator UGC to confer degrees.
These medical/health universities include All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences (AIIPHS) State Government University in New Delhi, Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine, Kolkata, West Bengal and Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research, West Bengal.
The Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine claims to offer Diploma courses, PG courses, Degree courses, Paramedical courses, Doctorate Research based programmes and Registered Medical Practitioner Systems courses in various fields related to alternative medicine.
Similarly, Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research claims to offer courses in Indo-Allopathy, Electro-Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Acupressure and Yoga-Therapy.
On the other hand, All India Institute of Public & Physical Health Sciences claims to offer Diploma courses in Sanitary Inspector, Industrial Courses, Engineering & IT Courses, Vocational Courses, Paramedical Courses and Polytechnic courses.
Although UGC released the list of 21 fake institutions last year urging that no students take admission in these institutions, the matter came to the notice again after it was discovered that these fake universities are offering bogus degrees to the students.
In its public notice released on August 1, the UGC stated that "It is hereby brought to the notice of students, parents and the general public that degrees can be awarded only by Universities/Institutions which are established under a State Act or Central Act or Provincial Act or institution, empowered to confer or grant degrees as per UGC Act 1965."
"However, it came to the notice of UGC that a number of institutions are offering degrees in contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities/institutions shall neither be recognised nor valid for higher education and employment purposes," adds the notice.
According to the UGC Act 1956, the right to confer or grant degrees shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under Section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees.
Further, the commission has requested to check the UGC website www.ugc.ac.in for information about recognised universities/institutions as well as fake institutions before taking admission in any institution for higher education.
In addition, the commission has urged to bring to their notice via email ugcampc@gmail.com regarding any universities/institutions is offering academic programmes in contravention of the UGC Act, so that appropriate action can be taken against such institutions.
