West Bengal University of Health Sciences reconstitutes internal complaints committee

Kolkata: Through a recent notification,the West Bengal University of Health Sciences has notified the reconstitution of the internal complaints committee of the university.

The restructuring of the previous internal complaints committee was done following the expiration of the tenure of holding office on 8.02.2021. It is to be noted that the tenure of internal complaints committee at a workplace is decided as per the provisions laid in Chapter-II, Section-4, Sub section-3 of 'The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace [Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal] Act, 2013, which states that, "the presiding officer and every member of the internal complaints committee shall hold office for such period, not exceeding three years, from the date of their nomination."

As per the notification released on15-03-2021, the newly reconstituted committee will have 5 members. Prof. (Dr.) Srabani Biswas, Deputy COE, WBUHS has been appointed as the presiding officer of the said committee. According to the 'The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace [Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal] Act, 2013, the presiding officer should be a woman employed at a senior level at the workplace amongst the employees.

The newly appointed committee members will be

Prof. (Dr.) Plaban Mukherjee, Dean (Faculty of Modern Medicine)WBUHS,
Dr. Amit Kumar Ghosh, OSD (Reg. Section), WBUHS
Smt. Rupasri Sarkar, Law Officer, WBUHS,
Smt. Sunita Kar, Joint Secretary, Behala Keertika, Kolkata

While four members of the committee are from amongst the office bearers of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, one member is from an NGO named
Behela Keertika, working in the field of women and children's rights. This is as per the provisions of 'The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace [Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal] Act, 2013 which states that one member of the committee shall be from amongst NGO or associations committed to the cause of women or who have had experience in social work or have legal knowledge.
