Warangal: Unsure about their future, the Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical students in Telangana, whose admissions got affected by the NMC cancellation of recognition of three private medical colleges in the state, staged a protest outside Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) on Friday.

Although the students, who are facing the possibility of a year loss, demanded immediate reallocation to other medical colleges in the State, the Vice-Chancellor of KNRUHS, Dr B Karunakar Reddy informed them that the State has not yet issued any directions in this regard.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that following a surprise inspection, the National Medical Commission (NMC) recently cancelled MBBS and PG medical admissions in three private medical colleges in the State resulting in a huge decrease in the total number of seats.

While MBBS and postgraduate courses have been cancelled at MNR Medical College and Hospital, Sangareddy, in the case of Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences, Vikarabad, the Apex Medical Regulator has cancelled the PG medical seats. Apart from this, TRR Institute of Medical Sciences, Patancheru lost its letter of permission for the first renewal and second batch of admission.

Although NMC had conducted the surprise inspection back on March 30, 2022, it acted on the inspection reports only after completion of the admission process of UG and PG medical courses.
Recently, the State Government intervened to solve the matter and set up a high-level committee as well. Apart from this, it also wrote to the NMC and assured giving directions to the medical colleges to rectify their mistakes.
Uncertain about their future, 50 such affected students had previously staged a protest at the KNRUHS demanding their reallocation to other colleges where seats were available. In fact, the students had also met with the State Health Minister as well in this regard.
Meanwhile, 48 such affected students belonging to MNR Medical College had approached a Division bench of Telangana High Court seeking a direction upon the NMC for issuing guidelines to the State for reallocating the students to existing Government and Private Medical Colleges in the State within a specific and short time frame without affecting the Academic
year of the Petitioners.
At that time, the students had also questioned the unnecessary delay on the part of the TelanganaState and KNRUSH for shifting the students.
Filing an affidavit before the HC bench, NMC, the Apex Medical Body had informed the Court that the guidelines for reallocating students of MNR Medical College had already been communicated to all the stakeholders on May 18, 2022.

NMC undersecretary Prabhat Kumar further informed that as per the guidelines, the students shall be reallocated on the basis of their merit and the availability of seats in the medical college where they are being reallocated.

The Commission in the affidavit had further made it clear that it was the responsibility of the State and the University for implementing the orders that had been issued by it and transfer the PG medical students to other medical colleges by enrolling them in the courses they were pursuing.

However, despite this, the State is yet to take a call regarding the hundreds of UG and PG medical students, whose admissions are at stake.

As per the latest media report by the New Indian Express, in an attempt to escalate their demands for immediate reallocation, the students protested outside the KNRUHS on Friday and they had been accompanied by their parents. Their placards and slogans made their demands very clear, which was immediate reallocation to other medical colleges on an immediate basis so that they would not have to lose a full academic year.

Although the students demanded immediate action, the Vice-Chancellor of KNRUHS, Dr. B Karunakar Reddy informed the students that he had not yet got any orders from the State Government regarding the issue.

Expressing their disappointment over the issue, a PG medical student from MNR Medical College and Hospital told TNIE, "Why should we lose one full year? If the colleges did not have the infrastructure, it was not our fault. We have been selected and were given admissions in these colleges."

While commenting on the matter, the father of an UG medical student told the daily, "My daughter was in first year in MNR Medical College when her admission was cancelled. The VC and the Minister had turned a blind eye to our problem. It was the university which gave admissions in those colleges and now after admissions have been cancelled, the university abdicated its responsibility of allotting them to other colleges."
