NBE grants recognition to 17 PG medical seats across 4 specialities at Odisha institutes

Bhubaneswar: Altogether 6 government medical institutions in Odisha have reportedly received recognition from the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) to expand postgraduate medical training programmes.

According to the latest TNIE report, the recognition has been granted to 17 postgraduate seats in four specialities, including paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthesiology and medicine.

Five district headquarters hospitals (DHHs) in Jagatsinghpur, Jeypore in Koraput, Phulbani in Kandhamal, Dhenkanal and Rayagada have received recognition to offer diploma programmes in paediatrics. Each hospital will have 2 seats, bringing the total to 10.

Meanwhile, the DHH Jagatsinghpur has also received recognition for a diploma programme in obstetrics and gynaecology with 2 seats, while DHH Angul has been granted recognition for 1 seat in the same speciality. In addition, Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital, Koraput, has received NBEMS recognition for 4 Diplomate of National Board (DNB) seats, including 2 each in anaesthesiology and medicine, reports TNIE.

Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling said the recognition is an important step towards developing government hospitals as centres for quality medical education and specialist training. He said, "The recognition of health institutions in Jagatsinghpur, Koraput, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Rayagada and Angul is an encouraging step in this direction. It will create more opportunities for producing specialist doctors in the state and play an important role in taking quality healthcare closer to the people."

He further congratulated the medical colleges, district hospitals, doctors, nursing officers and other healthcare personnel associated with the achievement and said the state government would continue to strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure.

The expansion of postgraduate training at district-level hospitals will provide more opportunities for specialist medical education, particularly in underserved and remote areas. It will also allow doctors undergoing postgraduate training to gain experience in district hospitals where a large section of the population accesses secondary healthcare.
