Gujarat HC Denies Granting Bail to Cardiologist Accused of Conducting Forced Angioplasties

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has sought to know stand of the National Medical Commission (NMC) on a plea by a NEET-PG 2021 candidate who lost her Postgraduate medical seat during the process of upgrading from MD Gynaecology to MD Paediatrics.

Although the medico had vacated her seat in Gynaecology in order to pursue Paediatrics at Rajkot Medical College, she did not receive the admission letter as she was marked as "unreported" on the day of admission, by the Central Admission Committee.

Permitting the petitioner to implead NMC, the Apex medical body, the HC bench has issued notice to the Commission and sought to know its stand by June 9, the date of further hearing of the plea, reports TOI.

The case concerned the petitioner, who upon clearing NEET-PG, secured admission to MD Gynaecology course at a Jamnagar based medical college. In fact, she started attending classes for three months, after which she opted for an upgrade as a few seats became vacant. Following this, she was offered a seat in Paediatrics at Rajkot Medical College and for admission to this course, the medico had to report on April 30.

Even though the medico has claimed being present for the process, her name did not figure on the new merit list or even after completion of the mop-up round.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, taking the matter before the HC bench, the counsel for the petitioner, Advocate Vicky Mehta submitted that because of the upgrade opportunity, the petitioner vacated her seat in MD Gynaecology seat in Jamnagar. When she did not receive the admission letter, she inquired to the Central Admission Committee in this regard.

Therefore, the Committee informed that her seat had been marked as 'unreported' on the day of admissions. Alleging negligence on the part of the authorities, the petitioner complained before the HC bench and sought directions upon the authorities seeking a grant of admission to the Paediatrics course in Rajkot.

On the other hand, while responding to the plea, the State Government last Wednesday reiterated the stand of the admission committee and clarified that teh reason for not considering the admission of the petitioner was her absence on April 30 for following the due procedure.

While the counsel for the petitioner sought grant of time from the HC bench for responding to the government's affidavit, the bench has permitted the medico to implead NMC in the matter.

Issuing notice to the Commission, the bench has sought its reply by June 9, the date of further hearing.
