As per the latest media report by the Times of India, now NMC, the apex medical education regulatory body in India has given its nod for 10 new super-specialty seats in the institute in 6 departments including cardiothoracic surgery, urology, plastic surgery, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and nephrology.
Among these, cardiothoracic surgery, urology, and plastic surgery departments will offer MCh degrees, and cardiology, cardiac anesthesia, and nephrology will offer DM degrees to the doctors.
These courses will commence in March.
Speaking to TOI regarding the matter, dean Dr S M Bandekar said the NMC nod for new super-specialty courses is an "achievement for GMC", which will ultimately provide a boost to the medical students in Goa.
Doctorate of Medicine (DM) and Master of Chirurgiae (MCh) are postgraduate diploma degrees awarded respectively in medical and surgical super specialties.
MCh degree is the most advanced qualification in surgery and in order to pursue it, having a medical degree is mandatory. Similarly, DM or Doctorate of Medicine is a PG super specialty degree course with duration of three years. It can be pursued after completing an MD or DNB degree.
