NMC Permission to Bhongir Medical College for 50 MBBS Seats
Bhongir: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Telangana, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has granted permission to set up the government medical college in Bhongir.
Confirming this, the Principal of the GMC told The Hans India, "The college will initially start with 50 seats. We have already received the required posts for the operation of the college and beds have been arranged. Preparations have been made in the building where the college will function."
The nod from the Apex Medical Education Regulatory Body i.e. NMC comes amid the prolonged uncertainty regarding the status of the NMC approval for the medical college.
When a government medical college was sanctioned for the district a year ago, the State Health Department had been preparing to upgrade the district hospital into a teaching hospital and commence the medical college from the old collectorate building on the outskirts of the town from this academic year.
For this, the district hospital, operative under Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP), was brought under the jurisdiction of the Director of Medical Education (DME), and most of the required positions across various categories were filled as per the medical college guidelines.
However, NMC had been withholding the crucial Letter of Intent (preliminary approval) for the college for some time. As per the latest media report by The Hans India, during the first inspection by the NMC team on June 23, the Commission identified several deficiencies in the proposed building for the medical college at the district hospital.
Thereafter, the State Government submitted a proposal to rectify those deficiencies and NMC conducted another online inspection at the end of July. However, the college still did not get the approval.
Following this, the officials submitted a third appeal after making further improvements and finally, NMC granted its nod for setting up the medical college. The Daily has reported that already 54 professors from various specialities have joined the teaching hospital, having a capacity of 220 beds.
Already these professors are providing outpatient services at the district hospital and as part of the hospital expansion, work has begun to add an additional floor to the existing district hospital building.
