No Relief for SGRR Medicos: Uttarakhand HC upholds MBBS Fee Order, directs students to pay hiked fee

Dehradun: Denying relief to the MBBS students of Shri Guru Ram Rai (SGRR) Institute of Medical and Health Sciences in Dehradun, the Nainital High Court has upheld the order for the increased fee payment.

While considering the case, the HC bench disposed of the interim relief application, the HC bench has directed the students to pay the difference in the fees in three instalments starting in the next two weeks, adds TOI.

"The petitioners had given respective undertakings to pay the fees in terms of the fee fixation done by the committee and the appellate authority. Considering that the petitioners would have to shell out the difference in the fee that they have paid, we grant them the liberty to deposit the difference in three equal instalments," read the order order.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that SGRR medical college authorities increased the MBBS fees from Rs 5 lakhs per annum to Rs 13 lakhs per annum, which is around 150 percent fee hike.

While the State quota students had been asked to submit Rs 26 lakhs, the students of management quota were told to pay Rs 37 lakh fees. The college management also had put the internships of the final year students on hold clarifying that the internship will commence only when the students will clear the due.

Raising their voice against this decision of the college management to increase the fees suddenly and put the MBBS internships on hold, the final year medicos of SGRRIMS, Dehradun initiated a protest earlier this month. Earlier, one of the protesting students of 2018 batch had informed Medical Dialogues that they would also approach the High Court bench in this regard.

However, the HC has now denied relief to the students. As per the latest media report by the Times of India, the Nainital HC bench has upheld the fee payment order and asked the students to pay the increased fees in three instalments. However, the students are not happy with the judgment and they are considering pursuing further legal recourse.

Commenting on the matter, a student told Edex Live on the condition of anonymity, "We were hoping that the high court will help us but it seemed like the judge was not ready to listen and the judgement was pre-decided."

"We still feel we were not heard properly. Everyone here is shocked that how, in the first hearing itself, the court has passed the decision. Also, time given to pay the first instalment (two weeks) is very less. No concession and no statement regarding the initiation of our internship is troublesome for us. Many of us are still incapable to pay this amount in such a small time frame," added another student.
