TN to add 855 nursing seats across govt institutes
Chennai: Taking a step towards expanding allied health programs alongside MBBS and BDS in Tamil Nadu, the state government is set to add a total of 855 seats, thereby increasing the total number of nursing seats in government institutions from 796 to 1,651.
These additional seats comprise a total of 660 seats for B.Sc Nursing, 120 for Post-Basic B.Sc. Nursing, and 75 for M.Sc. Nursing across 13 institutions.
The majority of the BSc Nursing seats will be added in the six model nursing colleges being established at government medical colleges with funding from the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.
Additionally, there will be seats at the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital in Coimbatore
According to the proposed seat matrix, 660 new BSc Nursing seats will be added to the existing 510 seats.
Among these, KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College in Trichy and the government medical colleges in Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Erode, and Tirunelveli will each receive 100 seats, while the Government Medical College and ESI Hospital in Coimbatore will receive 60 seats.
In addition to the existing 150 seats, 120 seats for the Post-Basic B.Sc. Nursing course will be distributed equally among the nursing colleges at Chengalpattu Medical College, Government Theni Medical College, and Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Cuddalore.
75 MSc Nursing seats will be distributed equally among the nursing colleges of Chengalpattu Medical College, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College (Salem), and Government Theni Medical College.
According to the TNIE media news report, an official from the Directorate of Medical Education and Research stated that the government has approved the proposal. Six model nursing colleges, being constructed at a cost of ₹40 crore with funding from the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, are now nearing completion.
