PGI Chandigarh to Take Decision soon on Implementation of Rotatory Headship
Chandigarh: The continuous efforts by the Faculty Association of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) might proved to be fruitful since the institute is likely to take a decision of implementing rotatory headship in the first week of April.
Sources have informed The Tribune that the committee, which had been set up for considering the proposal, has now recommended the applicability of the system for well-established institutes including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi and PGI and it is very likely that the committee will give its nod regarding the proposal.
The panel includes experts from various fields including NITI Aayog member Dr VK Paul; former PGI directors Dr KK Talwar and Dr Jagat Ram; former AIIMS-Delhi director Dr MC Misra; former ICMR DG and JIPMER president Dr VM Katoch; and IIT-Kanpur director Dr Abhay Karandikar.
The system of Rotatory Headship allows appointing the head of an institute among the members of the faculty on rotation basis. The demands for implementing this system at central government institutes like AIIMS and PGIMER has been pending for long.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that earlier the Faculty Association of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh had urged the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in this regard.
In the letter dated January 23, 2023, Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS) and Faculty Association of PGIMER, Chandigarh had referred to the fact that various committees constituted at both the institutes also endorsed the reform.
Apart from this, the associations had also referred to the fact that the representatives of the Faculty Association of JIPMER, Pondicherry and NIMHANS, Bengaluru had also supported the rotatory headship.

As per the latest media report by The Tribune, in case of PGI Chandigarh, the faculty association has been demanding rotatory headship for more than a decade. Previously, the proposal for rotatory headship got approved at the general body meetings of the association several times by a majority of votes.
Later, a five-member panel had been set up for considering the proposal and it recommended the applicability of rotatory headship for the well-established institutes.
Sources informed the daily that the concerned committee concluded that the system of rotatory headship has been running without any problems at other institutes such as the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. In these institutes, the system got implemented in the year 2013 and 1994 respectively.
