UP MBBS interns launch protest storm on X demanding stipend hike

New Delhi: Protesting against the low amount and demanding a hike in their stipend, MBBS interns in Uttar Pradesh recently held a storm on the social media platform X. The Twitter Storm started at 8 PM on 04.09.2025.
Currently, the medical interns in Uttar Pradesh receive Rs 12,000 per month as their stipend, which, the students have claimed, is the lowest stipend in the country.

In this regard, recently, the MBBS interns in the State wrote to the Health Minister. Referring to the amount of stipend received by the MBBS interns across the country, they urged to increase the stipend amount at least to Rs 25,000 per month.

"“UP govt talks big about development under CM Yogi, but when it comes to healthcare & medical education, even Bihar is ahead. Interns in Bihar get ₹27k, while in UP only ₹12k. Is this the ‘development model’?" wrote one X user.
Highlighting the situation of MBBS interns in the State, a doctor from Uttar Pradesh wrote, "Intern doctors in UP work 24×7 in hospitals during internship – handling OPDs, emergencies, wards & night duties. Yet, their stipend is far below dignity & survival needs."

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that earlier this year, the doctors in Uttar Pradesh urged the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Medical Education Brajesh Pathak to increase the stipend provided to the medical interns in the state.
Writing to the Deputy CM, the doctors under the CMJ Doctors Welfare Federation India pointed out that while the medical interns in the State get only Rs 12000 as a monthly stipend, similarly situated students in States like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi get an amount ranging between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per month.
Accordingly, they requested to reconsider and revise the stipend for the medical interns in Uttar Pradesh to be at par with or better than other states.
