2 Tamil Nadu doctors booked in 10-year-old boy's penectomy case

Sivaganga Police Case Against Two Doctors Over Alleged Medical Negligence in Child’s Treatment
Sivaganga: Two doctors from two private hospitals have been booked by Karaikudi North police in connection with alleged medical negligence after a 10-year-old boy reportedly underwent a penectomy (surgical removal of part or the entire penis) to treat a severe infection and save his life.
According to the complaint filed by the boy’s mother, the child was first taken to a private hospital in Karaikudi in May after developing urinary complications. As the condition persisted, he was shifted to another private hospital in the town, where he underwent surgery in the third week of May.

However, complications reportedly continued even after discharge. The child was again taken to the first hospital, but the family alleges that hospital staff did not provide a clear response and instead referred the case again to the second hospital, stating that the surgery had been performed there.
The family further alleged that they were pressured to shift the child to a specific private hospital in Madurai.
Instead, the family took the child to another private hospital in Madurai, where doctors reportedly informed them that the organ had become gangrenous and had to be surgically removed to save the child’s life.
“Having no other choice to save our son, we also agreed. Subsequently, they performed a surgery and removed the organ. My son’s life has been ruined due to the wrong treatment provided at the private hospital,” the father of the child alleged, reports The Hindu.
He has also alleged negligence in treatment and intimidation by the doctors involved and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Following the complaint, Karaikudi North police registered a case against two doctors from the private hospitals involved.
Police said they are awaiting a report from the Health Department on the aspect of medical negligence. The office of the Joint Director of Health Services said it has begun an inquiry, reports TNIE.
Further details are awaited as the case progresses.
