227 specialist doctors join 142 Govt Hospitals in Andhra Pradesh

AP Government Boosts Public Healthcare with New Specialist Doctor Appointments
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has appointed 227 in-service doctors, who recently completed their postgraduate studies, to 142 secondary hospitals across the state, marking a major milestone in the State government’s efforts to enhance public healthcare delivery.
The move is aimed at addressing the acute shortage of specialist doctors in secondary-level healthcare facilities that serve rural and semi-urban communities. Speaking to TNIE, Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav expressed satisfaction with the development, stating that the postings mark a major step forward in strengthening healthcare infrastructure. Out of 243 secondary hospitals in the State, 142 have now been reinforced with specialist doctors.

The newly appointed doctors represent a wide range of specialisations, including 35 gynaecologists, 35 general medicine experts, 30 general surgeons, 26 anesthesiologists, 25 paediatricians, 18 orthopedicians, 17 radiologists, 15 ophthalmologists, nine ENT specialists, one dermatologist, and one pathologist.
Among the hospitals, Gudur Area Hospital received the highest number of specialists—four in total, including a paediatrician, radiologist, dermatologist, and pathologist. Additionally, seven community health centres (CHCs) and six area hospitals have each been allotted three specialists. Thirty-one CHCs, 13 area hospitals, and three district hospitals received two specialists each, while 97 hospitals have been assigned one specialist apiece.
In a related development, the government announced that another 155 specialist doctors will soon be posted through a counselling process. These include 100 specialists for CHCs, 60 for 33 area hospitals, 10 for seven district hospitals, and two for maternal and child health (MCH) hospitals.
These postings come from a batch of 257 Primary Health Centre (PHC) doctors who enrolled in postgraduate courses during 2022–23 as in-service candidates. Upon completing their studies, 227 have been assigned to secondary hospitals, while the remaining 30, due to the lack of suitable vacancies, have been appointed as tutors in medical institutions under the Directorate of Medical Education (DME).
