28 year old GMC Surat Anatomy medico allegedly commits suicide after slitting wrists
Surat: In an unfortunate incident, a 28-year-old third-year resident doctor in the anatomy department at Government Medical College (GMC), Surat, allegedly died by suicide after reportedly slitting his wrists and hands.
As per police information, the doctor, who was due to complete his postgraduate degree course in anatomy this year, allegedly inflicted cuts on his wrists and hands in the dissection room shortly after a practical examination for first-year MBBS students.
TOI reported that he walked around the hall for some time after sustaining the injuries, resulting in substantial blood loss. According to hospital authorities, he was brought to the emergency ward at around 4.30 pm but had already died by the time he reached the facility.

"Dr ** had been in the dissection hall since morning and was involved in the undergraduate students’ examination. His own third-year exams had concluded last week, and he was completing some remaining terms," in-charge Medical Superintendent Dr Parul Vadgama was quoted as saying by PTI.
No suicide note was recovered by the police, and the reason behind him taking such a drastic step is not known at present.
The incident took place on Wednesday after the practical examination for first-year MBBS students at the medical college. The examination ended around 2.15pm, after which he is suspected to have entered the room.
Commenting on this, Jayesh Brahmbhatt, dean of GMC, said, "We had sought a report from the head of the anatomy department to ascertain whether he had been facing any issues. We are investigating whether he had any complaints or issues with anyone or anything."
Parul Vadgama, superintendent of Surat Civil Hospital, told TOI, "Dr ** was brought to the emergency ward at around 4.30pm. However, he had already died by the time he reached the emergency facility. Doctors found cuts on his body and there had been substantial blood loss. He was living with his wife and four-month-old child on the college campus."
"We have launched an investigation and are in the process of recording statements of various persons from the college as well as his family members. We are trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident. Prima facie, we have found cuts on his body," police said.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a first-year postgraduate medical student in the Department of Microbiology at GMC Surat allegedly died by suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his PG hostel room on August 9. The student had reportedly faced mental harassment and ragging by four senior doctors.
Following the incident, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Panseriya ordered an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. The committee reportedly found evidence that the doctor had been mentally harassed and ragged by four senior resident doctors. Following the findings, the four senior doctors were suspended for six months from the hospital, the hostel, and all teaching and academic activities.
The college had also initiated action against faculty members and suspended the head of the microbiology department for 90 days over their alleged failure to address the doctor's harassment complaint.
