3 Ayurveda PG students help deliver baby on Varanasi-bound train

Medical Emergency on Train
Hassan: In a rare medical emergency during a train journey, three postgraduate Ayurveda scholars stepped in to assist a pregnant passenger who went into labour onboard, ensuring a safe delivery despite the absence of immediate hospital care. Their timely response and presence of mind helped ensure the safety of both the mother and the newborn.
The doctors- Dr Rashmi Bilagi, Dr N Latashree and Dr M Shaheen are postgraduate students at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Ayurveda College and Hospital, Hassan. They were travelling from Hassan to Varanasi to attend a national conference when the emergency unfolded inside the train, reports Deccan Herald.
As the woman's labour progressed, fellow passengers faced uncertainty as the train was far from any hospital, making immediate medical care impossible.
Acting swiftly, the doctors responded to the emergency and approached the woman to assess her condition. After conducting an initial health check-up, they found that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck, which could have posed a serious risk during delivery.

They carefully untied the cord from the baby's neck and assisted the woman through the delivery process inside the moving train. As the baby did not cry immediately, the team started basic neonatal resuscitation, and the baby responded well.
Following the delivery, both the mother and the newborn were reported to be in stable condition. The doctors received appreciation from passengers and the public for their quick response, compassion and ability to provide medical assistance in an unexpected environment.
SDM Ayurveda College principal Dr Shylaji Uppinakuduru and director Dr Prasanna Narasimhan said, “The three young Ayurveda doctors have done an excellent job. They are an inspiration to many young doctors."
