3 critical care specialists get recognised in Stanford University 2025 list of World's Top 2% Scientists

New Delhi: Altogether, three renowned critical care specialists from prestigious health and medical institutes across India have been recognised among the world’s top 2% of scientists in the database curated by Professor John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository.
This honour acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field. The database of Stanford University for the year 2025 of top-cited scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted h-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.
Here are the details of the Indian Critical Care Specialists included in Stanford University's 2025 list:
1. Prof Sheila Nainan Myatra
Esteemed Professor of Critical Care Medicine at the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, Prof Sheila is the President of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM). She holds a professorship in the Intensive Care Medicine programme at the Homi Bhabha National Institute University and is Chair of the Intensive & Critical Care Medicine Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA).
She is among the 14 international airway experts on the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) difficult airway guidelines and the PUMA guidelines (Project for the Universal Management of the Airway). She has led the development of the AIDAA difficult airway guidelines and the first guideline for tracheal intubation in the ICU. Her research interests include hemodynamic monitoring, airway management and sepsis. She has developed a new test in hemodynamic monitoring, called the “tidal volume challenge” (CCM 2017).
She was awarded the European Airway Management Society (EAMS) Honorary Membership in 2022, FCCM (American College of CCM) and FICCM by ISCCM. She delivered the William C Shoemaker Honorary Lecture at SCCM 2023 in San Francisco, USA. She serves on the editorial board of several journals, including Anaesthesia, Canadian Journal of Anaesthesia, Journal of Critical Care, Anaesthesia Critical Care & Pain Medicine, Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical Care, Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology, Indian Journal of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (past Editorial Board member). She has several publications to her credit.
Prof Sheila holds a rank of 68,696 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 55,997 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 17, with a total of 1,589 citations for the year, also excluding self-citations.
2. Dr Mohan Gurjar
He is a Professor at the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow. Dr Mohan did his research on the role of biomarkers in predicting contrast-induced acute kidney injury in critically ill patients: a prospective observational study, Renal outcome of acute kidney disease in critically ill patients: a prospective observational study.
Recipient of the Presidential Citation Award at the 26th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), Hyderabad in 2020 and Honorary Fellowship of the Indian College of Critical Care Medicine (FICCM) at the convocation ceremony of the Indian College of Critical Care Medicine at Pune in 2012.
According to the list, Dr Mohan holds a rank of 162,811 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 155,398 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 695 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
3. Dr Atul Prabhakar Kulkarni
A renowned expert in critical care medicine. Dr Atul Kulkarni is a Professor and Head of the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, which is affiliated with the Homi Bhabha National Institute. He has held many important positions in the field, including serving as the President of the Asia Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine, the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Association of SAARC Critical Care Societies.
He has also been the Chancellor of the Indian College of Critical Care Medicine. At present, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Critical Care Medicine. With qualifications like MD, FISCCM, PGDHHM, and FICCM, Dr Kulkarni has made a significant contribution to advancing critical care in India.
As per the list, Dr Kulkarni holds a rank of 285,577 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 298,458 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 9, with a total of 504 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
