31-year-old ENT Surgeon critical, put on Ventilator after Pahalgam Terror Attack

New Delhi: Following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, a 31-year-old ENT surgeon from Tamil Nadu remains in critical condition at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. In an official statement released on Friday, the hospital confirmed that the young doctor is on ventilatory support and under close observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Dr Parmeshwaran was among the 17 injured in the tragic incident that took place on the lush green Baisaran grasslands near Pahalgam on April 23, where around 500 tourists had gathered. This was the deadliest attack since the region’s special status was revoked in 2019. It claimed the lives of 26 men—25 of them tourists—and left 17 others injured, including Dr. Parmeswaran.
According to the news reports, the young doctor sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and abdomen. He was initially treated at the Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where he underwent emergency surgery.
“Following the procedure, he was airlifted to the Jayaprakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS New Delhi, on 24th April 2025,” the hospital statement said, Hindustan Times reports.
According to medical experts, a close-range gunshot to the abdomen often results in devastating internal injuries. The liver, highly vascular and delicate, can bleed profusely, pushing the body into shock within moments. The intestines, equally vulnerable, are susceptible to multiple perforations and internal bleeding. Given the extent of such trauma, doctors at AIIMS have described the coming days as crucial for Dr. Parmeswaran's survival.

As per the recent media reports by the Indian Express, “We are just praying he recovers and we can take him home,” said Lokmanya Tilak, the maternal uncle of Parmeswaran’s wife, Dr Nayanthara Aravind. She has not spoken since the incident, with the family citing the trauma from the attack.
