40 Indian paediatricians, doctors, scientists get recognised in Stanford University 2025 list of World's top 2% scientists

Stanford University List 2025
New Delhi: Altogether 40 paediatricians, doctors and scientists from India's various prestigious health and medical institutes have been recognised among the world''s top 2% of scientists in the prestigious database curated by Professor John PA Ioannidis of Stanford University, in collaboration with the Elsevier Data Repository.
Being recognised in Stanford University's top 2% list of scientists acknowledges their pioneering research, clinical achievements, and consistent impact on the field.
Stanford University's 2025 database of the top-cited scientists provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a 2% or above percentile rank in the sub-field.
Below are the details of Indian paediatricians, doctors, and scientists featured in Stanford University's list for 2025:
(1) Tanu Singhal-Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute:
Dr. Tanu Singhal has been associated with Kokilaben Hospital since its inception in January 2009 as a Consultant in Paediatrics and Infectious Disease. She received training in Pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi and Infectious Diseases and International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK. Thereafter, she acquired further expertise in Pediatrics and Infectious Disease at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, between 2002-2008.
Dr. Singhal has two books in her name, 20 book chapters, 65 publications in indexed national and international journals, and several hundred guest lectures. She is an advisor to the ICMR on antimicrobial stewardship, technical expert in pediatric tuberculosis for the National Tuberculosis control and elimination program and also executive board member of the Fungal Infection Study Forum.
She has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 37396 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 39467 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 11, with altogether 478 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(2) Chandrakant Lahariya- Centre for Health: The Specialty Practice:
Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya is an internationally acclaimed primary care physician, academician, health policy researcher, global health expert, and writer. He has nearly 20 years of experience in ‘connecting grassroots to global health’.
His areas of work and expertise include primary care, lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity, community engagement in health, child health, vaccination, school health, early childhood development, health policy, health systems, emerging and re-emerging diseases, and universal health coverage.
Dr Lahariya has worked as staff member & consultant with multiple UN agencies & international health organisations such as WHO India Country office, WHO regional office for Africa in Brazzaville; WHO HQ in Geneva; UNICEF field office for Maharashtra, India; UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia; World Bank India; Engender Health; WISH Foundation & Jhpiego India, amongst others.
He set up a not-for-profit 'Foundation for people-centric Health System', which works at the grassroots level in delivering quality primary healthcare services to marginalised populations. He also worked with and studied the health systems of nearly 30 countries and supported policy and program formulations in multiple countries, including India.
Dr. Lahariya has been part of key policy reforms in India i.e. national vaccine policy 2011, national health policy 2017 and designing & implementation of Mohalla clinics of Delhi & ayushman bharat program and health & wellness centres- both in areas of primary health care In the country. He is the co-lead of an early childhood development program which is based upon science & uses the toys and books for brain development of newborns & toddlers. As part of programme, he leads workshops for parents.
He has published more than 150 articles in reputed science journals, written 50+ chapters, contributed to 300+ monographs & reports, 500+ OpEds in leading newspapers. He is in top 2% researchers globally in field of clinical medicine & pediatrics. He has received multiple awards including WHO Certificate of Appreciation 2014 & Indian Council of Medical Research/MoHFW Award for the year 2012.
(3) Harshpal Singh Sachdev- Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science & Research:
Currently working as a Senior Consultant in Pediatrics and Clinical Epidemiology at the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research, New Delhi, Dr. Harshpal Singh Sachdev pursued his MBBS degree at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and later obtained his MD in Pediatrics from the same institute.
Previously, he worked as an adjunct professor at the Division of Population Health, St. John's Research Institute, St. John's National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore. He was also a visiting fellow at the Academic Unit of Human Development and Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, UK, and an Honorary Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Child Health- Centre for International Health & Development, University College of London, UK.
Dr. Sachdev has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 55582 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 57314 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 18, with altogether 3450 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(4) Rakesh K. Lodha, AIIMS New Delhi:
A prolific author and researcher in the field of Pediatrics, Dr. Rakesh K. Lodha is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Dr. Lodha has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 70110 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 75551 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 27, with altogether 10998 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(5) Vinod K. Paul- AIIMS New Delhi:
Dr. Vinod Kumar Paul is a renowned Indian pediatrician and physician scientist currently serving as a member of NITI Aayog. Earlier, he served as a professor of neonatology at the Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS New Delhi from 1985 to 2020. Dr. Paul is associated with India's health policy as well as child and maternal health programs.
He was appointed as a Member of the NITI Aayog back in August 2017, when he was in charge of the Health and Nutrition vertical. e has contributed towards formulating the POSHAN Abhiyaan and the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India from 2018-2020.
Dr. Paul has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 83805 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 90496 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 20, with altogether 2675 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(6) Joseph Lazar Matthew- PGIMER Chandigarh:
Dr. Joseph Lazar Matthew is the Head of Paediatric Pulmonology and principal coordinator of DST-HUB at PGIMER, Chandigarh. After pursuing an MD degree in Pediatrics, Dr. Matthew pursued a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Respirology and a PhD degree.
Dr. Matthew has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 107260 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 102888 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 831 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(7) Pratibha D. Sanghi- Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences:
Currently working as a Senior Consultant, Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Neurology at Amrita School of Medicine, Faridabad, Dr. Pratibha D. Sanghi is a paediatric neurologist with more than 38 years of experience.
She has won Lifetime Achievement in Pediatric and Neurology and Neurodevelopment, 2016, First S. Janaki Memorial Oration for outstanding contribution in Pediatric and Adolescent Neurology, 2013, Medical Scientist Award by Dr Shurvir Singh Trust, Rajasthan, Asian Research Award, Tokyo, James Flett Gold Medal (First Prize), 1987.
Dr. Sanghi has authored the book on "Seizures and Epilepsy in Children" and edited an international book on "CNS Infections in Children". She has also published more than 400 papers in India and has International awards for her book.
She has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. She holds a rank of 111300 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 128911 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 371 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(8) Unmesh S. Kapil- Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences:
Dr. Kapil is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hepatology at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. He has completed his Gastroenterology training from Christian Medical College Vellore and Advanced GI Endoscopy Fellowship from the same institution.
He received International Travel award at TCAP 2016, Young Investigator Award: APDW 2016, Presidential poster: ISGCON 2016. His areas of research interest include NAFLD and its spectrum, Bile and its metabolism, Enterohepatic circulation,Biliary tree including Gall bladder, bile duct and pancreas. Dr. Kapil has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 127216 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 147052 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 850 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(9) MJeeva Sankar- AIIMS New Delhi:
Dr. MJeeva Sankar is currently working as an Additional Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He pursued his MBBS and MD in Paediatrics from Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai, and thereafter studied DM in Neonatology at AIIMS, New Delhi. He joined AIIMS as an Assistant Professor back in 2014.
Dr. Sankar has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. (10) Nita Bhandari- Society for Applied Studies Kolkata:
A senior scientist and Director of the Society for Applied Studies, Nita Bhandari is a public health researcher having notable contributions to zinc deficiency, mortality sharing effect of exclusive breastfeeding, vitamin A, rotavirus vaccine clinical development and efficacy of biological foods to community treatment of severe acute malnutrition.
Dr. Bhandari has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. She holds a rank of 139266 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 148563 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 16, with altogether 1704 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(11) Dr. Shelly K. Awasthi- University of Lucknow:
Dr. Shally Awasthi is an Indian professor and pediatric pulmonologist and previously she worked at the King George's Medical University (KGMU). Dr. Awasthi was the first Indian scientist to be appointed to the Health-Security Interface Technical Advisory Group (HSI-TAG) of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Dr. Awasthi has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. She holds a rank of 139522 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 150487 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, her h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 14, with altogether 1183 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(12) Dr Susheel Kumar Kabra- AIIMS New Delhi:
Former Professor at AIIMS Delhi Dr. S K Kabra is a distinguished Paediatric Pulmonology Specialist at Apollo Hospitals Indraprastha, Delhi, with 40 years of experience in the field. He holds an MD degree in Pediatrics, a DNB in Pediatrics, and a Diplomate of Pediatric Respiratory Medicine from the European Respiratory Society.
Dr. Kabra is renowned for his proficiency in managing complex respiratory conditions in children, including asthma, cystic fibrosis, and sleep-disordered breathing. He actively engages in research and has contributed to numerous academic discussions and medical conferences, sharing his insights and findings with peers to advance the field of pediatric pulmonology.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Kabra has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 155146 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 174843 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 13, with altogether 1044 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(13) Dr Surjit K. Singh- PGIMER Chandigarh:
A distinguished paediatric leader, Prof Singh heads the Paediatrics Department and Paediatric Allergy/Immunology Unit at PGIMER, Chandigarh. He has 480 research publications to his name.
Dr. Singh founded India’s first Paediatric Immunology Unit and initiated the sole DM Program in Paediatric Clinical Immunology/Rheumatology.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Singh has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 165178 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 172625 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 10, with altogether 713 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(14) Dr Kana Ram Jat- AIIMS New Delhi:
Dr. Kana Ram Jat is a Professor of Pediatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per the Stanford University's list of 2025.
He holds a rank of 175840 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 185181 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 7, with altogether 241 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(15) Dr Praveen M. Kumar- PGIMER Chandigarh:
Currently working as the Director and Head of Clinical Sciences at Nference, Dr. Praveen M. Kumar pursued his Senior Residency from PGIMER Chandigarh. While pursuing his DM degree in Clinical Pharmacology from the institute, he collaborated with multiple departments within PGIMER to solve research questions posted by multiple teams and published more than 70 PubMed-indexed articles based on the work conducted during his tenure.
He received the V.K. Bhargava Gold Medal of PGIMER, Chandigarh for 2017 and he was also the Editorial Board Member of the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Kumar has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 216756 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 225975 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 9, with altogether 578 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(16) Dr Sunit Chandra Singhi- Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences:
A paediatrician of international repute, Dr. Sunit Chandra Singhi is currently working as the Head of Paediatrics at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad. He was the head of Advance Pediatric Centre, PGIMER Chandigarh for over 33 years, chairman of paediatrics at Medanta-The Medicity for 5 years, Principal and Head of Department MM Institute of Medical Sciences, Ambala.
Dr. Singhi set up India's first Paediatric Intensive Care unit and first post-doctoral DM courses in Pediatric Critical care. He was a visiting professor at the Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School and Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.
His research covered fluid-electrolytes, neurocritical care and treatment of acute asthma and childhood pneumonia. His work contributed to better understanding of fluid-electrolyte balance and body-water homeostasis newborns, bacterial meningitis, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and septic shock, and influenced clinical practice and guidelines. He elucidated the association between transplacental fluid overload and neonatal jaundice and transient tachypnea of newborn. He received research grants from Indian council of Medical Research, WHO, CCMRC, INCLEN and Sweden and has authored 440 peer-reviewed publications, 79 textbook chapters and 11 books. He served as an Associate Editor of PCCM and is a section editor of Rogers’ Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Singhi has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 222551 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 224512 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 7, with altogether 448 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
In recognition of his work, Dr. Singhi received ICMR’s Amrut-Mody Unichem Prize 2010, for child-health, National Academy of Medical Sciences’ KL Wig Award 2013, Swasth Bharat Samman-2011, Claris Critical Care Oration Award 2003, Life Time achievement Awards, medals , orations and best paper awards.
(17) Dr Piyush K. Gupta- University College of Medical Sciences:
A renowned academician, teacher, researcher, author, and editor with more than 40 years of experience in the field of Child Health and Care, Medical Education, Research, and Publishing, Dr. Piyush K. Gupta is currently working as Principal and Professor of Pediatrics at University College of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India.
He has received national and international recognition in the fields of Child survival, Nutrition, Medical Education, and Biomedical Editing. Dr. Gupta served as a technical expert/advisor on policy making and research to the Government of India, WHO, UNICEF, Public Health Foundation of India, and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and conferred fellowships by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, National Neonatology Forum, National Academy of Medical Sciences, and Royal College of Paediatrics. UK. American Academy of Pediatrics awarded him for work on micronutrients and fetal growth.
Back in 2022, he was awarded the “Outstanding Asian Pediatrician Award” by the Asia Pacific Pediatric Association. He has also served as the Joint Secretary of South Asia Pediatrics Association for 3 years.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Gupta has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 277504 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 303740 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 347 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(18) Dr Maharaj Krishan Bhan- IIT Delhi:
An Indian pediatrician and clinical scientist, Dr. Maharaj Krishan Bhan, served as a National Science Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where he continued his influential work after his tenure as the Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology.
Dr. Bhan pursued his MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune and M.D. degree from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh. He carried out extensive post-doctoral research at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in the areas of diarrheal diseases and child nutrition with an emphasis on public health issues. Earlier, he also served as the President of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER).
Among his most notable contributions, he was known for developing Rota Viral Vaccine in collaboration with Bharat Biotech International. He was positioned as Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, until 2012. An elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences,[4] he was awarded in 1990 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in the Medical Sciences category. He also received one of the highest civilian awards- Padmabhushan for civil services back in 2013. Dr. Bhan passed away in 2020.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Bhan has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 286307 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 306843 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 15, with altogether 968 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(19) Dr Rashmi Kumar- King George's Medical University:
Former Professor and Head, Pediatrics at King George Medical University, Lucknow, Dr. Rashmi Kumar has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world, as per Stanford University's list of 2025. He holds a rank of 306642 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 289693 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 6, with altogether 273 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(20) Dr Ballambattu Vishnu Bhat- Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital:
Currently working at Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry, Dr. Ballambattu Vishnu Bhat Dr. B. Vishnu Bhat has completed his MBBS in 1974 and MD (Pediatrics) in 1979 from JIPMER, Pondicherry, India which is an institute of National importance. He joined the same institute as a faculty and later headed the department of pediatrics and Neonatology. He retired as Director, JIPMER in 2018. He is presently working as an Adviser – Medical Researchand publications in AVMC&H, Pondicherry.
Dr. Bhat has conducted several research projects related to neonatal and Pediatrics health. He was a faculty in the medical education unit in JIPMER and later in AVMC&H. He has published nearly 400 scientific publications and more than 60 book chapter. He has delivered several orations. His area of interest are perinatal asphyxia, neonatal infections, low birth weight infant management and promotion of breast milk feeding.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Bhat has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 319982 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 366865 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 8, with altogether 361 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(21) Dr Meenu K. Singh- All India Institute of Medical Sciences Rishikesh:
An eminent academician, clinician, and healthcare leader with more than 35 years of distinguished service in Pediatrics, Pediatric Pulmonology, Telemedicine, and Evidence-Based Medicine, Dr. Meenu K. Singh is currently serving as the Executive Director and CEO of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Rishikesh, since July 2022.
She pursued her MBBS from H.P. Medical College, Shimla, and later pursued MD Pediatrics from PGIMER Chandigarh in 1986. She also pursued Fellowship in Pediatric Respiratory Medicine from Nine Wells Hospital, Dundee, UK and Fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Singh has more than 300 national and international peer-reviewed publications. She is the Principal Investigator on several ICMR, DST, DBT, and MoHFW projects, contributor to WHO guidelines, National TB and Ashthma Management protocols.
As per Stanford University's list of 2025, Dr. Singh has been recognised as one of the top 2% scientists across the world. He holds a rank of 321328 in the list based on the composite score excluding self-citations, and 374158 when all citations are included. By the end of 2024, his h-index, excluding self-citations, stands at 11, with altogether 531 citations for 2024 (excluding self-citations).
(22) Dr Ramesh K. Agarwal- AIIMS New Delhi:
Ramesh Agarwal works as a Professor of Paediatrics, leads the Newborn Division and WHO-CC at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. He is engaged in establishing a program on Neonatal Sepsis involving institutions and scientists of diverse background in India and beyond. His interest lies in healthcare technology innovation and he supports and mentors many groups that make healthcare affordable and high quality in developing countries.

(25) Dr Ishwar Chander Verma- AIIMS New Delhi:
A renowned specialist and pioneer in the field of Genetics, and a Padma Shri awardee, Dr. Ishwar Chander Verma, passed away last year. Dr Verma worked in medicine in East Africa for one and a half years and then went to England to obtain training in paediatrics and genetics. From 1967 till 1996, he worked at AlIMS where he established himself as a professor of pediatrics and the head of the genetic department. Later, this unit got recognition as a WHO collaborating centre in genetics for creditable performance. After AIIMS, he joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital as the head of the department of genetic medicine.
Dr Verma was the Advisor and Ex-Chairman at the Institute of Medical Genetics and Genomics at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He was the only doctor from Delhi to feature in the list of Padma awardees in 2023. He was conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour in the country for his contribution and dedication towards Genetic medicine on Republic Day last year.

(28) Dr Thekkekara Jacob John- CMC Vellore:
A Paediatrician and virologist of international repute, Professor (Dr.) Thekkekara Jacob John started his academic career as an Assistant Professor in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Arizona, USA. Later he worked at the Christian Medical College, Vellore, as Professor and Head of the Departments of Clinical Virology and Microbiology. Post his retirement from the CMC he served as the Emeritus Medical Scientist of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Professor John established India’s first diagnostic virology laboratory and conducted pioneering research on infectious diseases, clinical virology, vaccinology and epidemiology. He documented world’s first ‘vaccine-failure’ polio cases despite three doses of live vaccine, and showed several ways to improve vaccine efficacy, including ‘pulse vaccination’. His model of polio control in Vellore and North Arcot district became the forerunner of global polio eradication.
He established a retrovirus laboratory and field unit and, in 1986, detected HIV infection among sex workers, first in India. He guided opening of HIV sentinel surveillance in all states by ICMR Task Force and instituting donor blood screening for HIV. A Centre of Excellence in Virology (ICMR, 1979-94) and National Reference Centre for HIV (Government of India, 1986-95) functioned under the leadership of Professor John.
