AP Junior doctors launch strike over stipend revision, doctors' body extends support

New Delhi: The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has extended its solidarity and support to the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors’ Association (AP JUDA) as they begin Phase 1 of their strike on August 11, 2026, over their long-pending demand for a stipend revision.
The strike follows repeated representations and negotiations that failed to resolve the issue. According to FAIMA, the junior doctors have sought a 30% hike in stipend, while the proposal currently being offered is only 3%.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that following written assurances and an invitation for talks from the Director of Medical Education (DME) on stipend revision, the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA) on Monday announced a one-week deferment of its proposed strike. The association said the decision was taken in response to the DME’s request and to provide an opportunity for constructive dialogue with senior health officials. However, it clarified that the temporary postponement should not be interpreted as a withdrawal of its demand for a fair revision of stipends.
AP JUDA has also raised several other demands, including implementation of the revised stipend with effect from January 1, 2026. The association has sought strict adherence to National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations regarding the recruitment of non-medical faculty, including candidates holding MSc and PhD qualifications.
The association has also opposed any proposal to increase the retirement age, maintaining that the existing retirement age of 65 years should remain unchanged.
FAIMA said the concerns of interns, postgraduate students, super-speciality postgraduate students, senior residents and other resident doctors should not be ignored. It urged the authorities to initiate meaningful dialogue with the protesting doctors and resolve the issues at the earliest.
“Residents are the backbone of healthcare delivery. Their dignity, rights and welfare matter,” FAIMA said while expressing its support for AP JUDA.
In a recent post on X, Medicopenia also extended its support to AP JUDA and urged the authorities to hold meaningful dialogue with the protesting doctors and resolve the stipend-related issues at the earliest.
