Bengaluru doctor arrested for allegedly assaulting couple over citizenship dispute

Bengaluru: A doctor has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a Bangladeshi couple residing in Bengaluru's Whitefield area following a dispute over their citizenship. Police registered a case based on a complaint filed by the woman, arrested the doctor and later produced him before a court, which granted him bail.

Police are also verifying the couple's immigration status as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to the police, the incident took place after the doctor allegedly questioned the couple about their nationality. The situation reportedly escalated, with the doctor accused of physically assaulting the couple.

After receiving the woman's complaint, the police initiated legal action and arrested the doctor. Officials said the accused was later produced before a local court, which granted him bail. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police officials said preliminary inquiries suggest that the couple is from Bangladesh. However, they clarified that authorities are still collecting information to verify their identity, immigration status and the circumstances under which they are residing in India.

Investigators also stated that even if the doctor suspected the couple of being illegal immigrants, he should have informed the police instead of allegedly taking matters into his own hands. They stressed that such issues must be handled through the legal process and not through violence or confrontation.

According to The Times of India, Police said the doctor could have alerted them instead of attacking the couple. “It is true the victims are from Bangladesh. We are collecting more information about them,” an investigating officer said.

The doctor allegedly told investigators that he acted emotionally because he believed there were many illegal immigrants living in and around the Whitefield area.
