Bengaluru doctor booked for negligence after woman's post-tubectomy death

Bengaluru: Following the death of a 21-year-old woman after a laparoscopic tubectomy at a medical camp in Ramanagara, Karnataka, police have booked a doctor for causing death by negligence based on findings submitted by the Directorate of Medical Education.

According to the news reports, the woman died at 10:32 am on March 26, 2025, after developing severe complications following the procedure conducted at the medical camp. Her husband, a resident of Vijayanagar, Ramanagara, had earlier lodged a complaint at Ramanagara Town Police Station, leading to the registration of an unnatural death case in March 2025.

During the investigation, the postmortem report and viscera analysis were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). The findings were later reviewed by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), which later stated that medical negligence on the part of the operating doctor could not be ruled out.

Based on these findings, police sub-inspector Syed Tanveer Hussain filed a complaint leading to the registration of an FIR against the doctor, who is associated with a hospital on the Bengaluru–Mysuru Road. The case was officially registered on Monday under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Speaking to TNIE, an officer said, “After the postmortem, the viscera were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), and the FSL report was sent to the Directorate of Medical Education for a final report. The report stated that medical negligence on the part of the doctor conducting a laparoscopic tubectomy cannot be ruled out. Based on the final report, the FIR was registered against the doctor. The case is still under investigation, and the doctor has not yet been arrested.”

The incident has raised concerns about surgical procedures conducted in camp settings and the need for strict adherence to medical safety standards.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a case of alleged medical negligence had been registered following the death of a 27-year-old woman during a free laparoscopic sterilization procedure at Madikeri District Hospital. The incident has sparked widespread protests.
