Candle march announced for 4 doctors killed in Saket building collapse

New Delhi: Four young doctors lost their lives in the tragic collapse of an illegally constructed building in South Delhi's Saidulajab area. The doctors were among several students and medical aspirants affected by the tragic incident, which reportedly left around 30 people injured, including nearly 25 medicos preparing for FMG and NEET PG examinations.

In a social media post, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) mentioned that the deceased were young doctors who had stepped out for food shortly before the collapse.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening in Saidulajab near Saket Metro Station, where a five-storey commercial building suddenly collapsed in a "pancake collapse," with the upper floors crashing onto the lower levels. The collapse also affected a nearby canteen that was frequented by medical and engineering students living in the area.

Commenting on the incident, FAIMA FMG In-Charge Dr Jaswant Yadav, in an earlier update posted on X, said, "An unfortunate incident of a building collapse in the Saket area has resulted in reports of approximately 30 people being injured. (Around 25 are doctors) So far, 12 people have been located, of whom 2 individuals have been confirmed deceased."

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy, FAIMA stated that several young doctors preparing for FMG and NEET-PG examinations were affected, and some were declared brought dead at Safdarjung Hospital.

"These dedicated young minds had devoted themselves to the noble profession of medicine and were working tirelessly towards their dreams. This devastating loss has left the entire medical fraternity in shock and grief. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. We pray for strength and courage for their loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time, and we wish a speedy recovery to those who have been injured," the association said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, FAIMA has announced a candle march to pay tribute to the deceased doctors and medical students. The march will be held on Wednesday at 5:00 PM at Bada Gurudwara, Saket, under the guidance of Dr Jaswant Yadav.

FAIMA has appealed to doctors, medical students, and members of the fraternity to participate in the march and pay their respects to the departed souls.

Extending support, FAIMA Chief Patron Dr Rohan Krishnan, in a post on his official X handle, said, "Four young doctors left for eating food. They never came back. The government needs to own up to its responsibilities."

"The tragic loss of our colleagues in the Saket building collapse is not just a tragedy for their families—it is a wound on the entire medical fraternity. Today we gather not merely to mourn, but to ensure that their memories are honoured and their voices are not forgotten. I urge every doctor, medical student, intern, resident, and healthcare worker to join the Candle March and stand united for justice, accountability, and the dignity of our profession. I will be there personally at the Candle March at Bada Gurudwara, Saket, at 5:00 PM. We will remember. We will stand together. We will seek justice," he added.
