CBI submits sealed report on alleged conspiracy in RG Kar doctor rape-murder case

Kolkata: In a significant development in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday submitted a report to the Calcutta High Court on its investigation into the alleged conspiracy surrounding the rape and murder of the doctor in August 2024.

A division bench of Justices Shampa Sarkar and Tirthankar Ghosh said the matter, which is being heard in-camera, will be taken up again for arguments on November 20.

The central agency submitted the report in a sealed cover to the court as per its direction during the previous hearing, reports PTI.

The development comes after the High Court had asked the central agency to submit details on how its investigation had traced the alleged involvement of certain persons in the conspiracy linked to the rape and murder of the doctor.

On May 21, the court had directed the constitution of a three-member special investigation team of the CBI, headed by its Joint Director, East, to examine developments from the time the trainee doctor had dinner on the night of August 9, 2024, until her cremation.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a six-member team of officers from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) visited the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday in connection with the probe into the 2024 rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

The order followed a petition by the doctor’s parents, who alleged that evidence had been destroyed and that attempts were made to downplay the incident in its immediate aftermath.

The young doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital on the night of August 9, 2024. The case triggered large protests and night vigils in West Bengal and sparked outrage across the country.

In the original rape-murder case, former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was convicted by the Sealdah Sessions Court and sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of his life.
