Chennai doctor arrested for allegedly sending obscene messages, threats to niece over Rs 5 lakh dispute

Chennai: A doctor has been arrested by the Teynampet Police in Chennai for allegedly sending obscene and derogatory messages to his niece and issuing threats following a financial dispute involving money reportedly lent for his medical education.

According to the police complaint, the dispute arose after the complainant's mother allegedly sought repayment of Rs 5 lakh, which she had earlier lent to her younger brother to support his medical studies. The family reportedly contacted the doctor through WhatsApp on June 12 to request the repayment.

The complainant alleged that instead of responding to the request, the doctor sent obscene and derogatory messages over WhatsApp. She further claimed that during a subsequent video call, he verbally abused both her and her mother and allegedly threatened to kill them.

Based on the complaint, the Teynampet Police registered a case and initiated an investigation. The accused doctor was summoned for inquiry but allegedly failed to appear before the investigating officers. Police further alleged that he switched off his mobile phone and remained absconding, prompting efforts to trace his whereabouts.

According to DT Next, a special police team tracked the accused using technical surveillance and arrested him from Thanjavur. Following his arrest, he was produced before a magistrate court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

The investigation is currently underway. Police are expected to examine the electronic communications, including the alleged messages and call records, as part of the probe. No statement from the accused or his legal representative was immediately available at the time of reporting, and the allegations against him are yet to be tested in court.
