Dean, Senior doctor of Burdwan Medical College Hospital transferred after Junior Doctors' protest
Kolkata: In response to an intense protest by junior doctors demanding the resignation of two senior doctors, the West Bengal Health Department recently transferred Dr Tapash Ghosh, Dean of students’ welfare and Dr Nupur Ghosh, both from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital (BMCH).
The health department removed Dr Nupur Ghosh from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of BMCH and transferred her to Gopiballavpur Super Speciality Hospital in the Jhargram district. She is the wife of accused Dr Avik De, the fake fingerprint expert found roaming in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College where the postgraduate doctor was found dead and the close associate of former principal Sandip Ghosh.
Noting that the government had removed the two senior doctors, the junior doctors ended their protest as their demands were fulfilled. Previously, they sieged the principal of Burdwan Medical College Dr Moushumi Banerjee as a mark of protest.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that both the West Bengal Health Department and West Bengal Medical Council suspended Dr Avik de and Dr Birupaksha Biswas. While the State Health Department suspended these two doctors after several allegations were raised against them for allegedly being involved in irregularities, misconduct, and being part of the North Bengal Lobby across medical colleges, the State Medical Council suspended Avik Dey and Birupakhya Biswas following pressure from all fronts, including that of the striking junior medics, for their alleged nexus in the crime.
On the other hand, Dr Tapas Ghosh has been removed from his post but his transfer to another health facility is unknown. This comes after the junior doctors began indefinite agitation demanding his resignation. They claimed that Dr Tapas is a close associate of Sandip Ghosh and accused him of promoting threat culture as he had threatened doctors and junior doctors in BMCH, according to the Indian Express news report.
In another separate order, nine students, five interns, two junior and two senior interns have been debarred by the state health department and served show cause notice due to allegations that they had threatened junior doctors.
They have been directed not to enter the college and hostel campus as an investigation is underway against them. The order will remain in effect until the investigation committee’s process is completed. However, they can visit the campus on the call of the investigation committee.
