Delhi Police foils attack on doctor, arrests two suspects after gunfight

Doctors
New Delhi: Delhi Police arrested two suspected shooters following a gunfight in Bakkarwala, allegedly foiling an attempt to attack a doctor at a private hospital who had reportedly received death threats linked to an extortion demand.
Both suspects sustained injuries during the exchange of fire, while police recovered two Glock pistols from them.
The operation followed intelligence inputs about the movement of suspected members of a criminal gang in northwest Delhi. Teams from the Delhi Police Crime Branch and Haryana Police’s Special Task Force were deployed to intercept the suspects before they could reach their alleged target.
According to police, the suspects were travelling in a Mahindra Thar when officers spotted the vehicle near a flyover and signalled the driver to stop. Instead of stopping, the occupants allegedly accelerated and attempted to escape through a service road.
Their attempt to flee ended when the SUV collided with a utility pickup at a T-junction. The two occupants then reportedly abandoned the damaged vehicle and tried to escape on foot.
“Both occupants abandoned the wrecked SUV and started fleeing on foot. When cops challenged them and asked them to surrender, the two drew out 9mm Glock pistols and fired around eight indiscriminate rounds,” Dhaliwal said, reports TOI.
The police team initially took cover and fired six warning shots. When the suspects allegedly continued firing, officers returned fire in self-defence.
Both suspects sustained gunshot injuries and were overpowered before being taken to a hospital for treatment. Police subsequently recovered two Glock pistols from the scene.
Police suspect that a gangster had issued threats to the doctor after allegedly making extortion demands and had sent the two shooters to carry out the attack.
Both suspects sustained gunshot injuries and were overpowered at the spot. Two Glock pistols were recovered from them, and they were taken to RTR Hospital for treatment. One of the suspects was identified as a 19-year-old from Rohtak, while the other was also believed to be a teenager.
Police said the suspected shooters had allegedly been sent to attack the owner of a hospital in Bakkarwala after the doctor received death threats linked to extortion demands.
Investigators are examining whether the Bakkarwala incident forms part of the gang’s wider extortion operations in the Delhi-NCR region. Authorities are also trying to trace the alleged gang leader and establish how the suspected shooters were recruited and directed.
