Digital arrest scam: Odisha doctor loses over Rs 12 lakh to fake cops

Rayagada: In another shocking case of cyber fraud, an Additional District Public Health Officer in Odisha’s Rayagada district allegedly lost more than Rs 12 lakh after fraudsters kept her under digital arrest for two days.

The doctor was made to transfer the money after being repeatedly threatened and frightened by fraudsters who pretended to be police officers and courier officials, warning her of arrest if she did not cooperate.

According to the police, the fraud began when the doctor received a call from an unknown person claiming to be from a courier company. The caller informed her that a suspicious parcel linked to her Aadhaar card had been found and that serious charges had been registered in her name.

Soon after, the call was handed over to another person who introduced himself as a police officer. The scammers warned her not to step out of her house until the verification process was completed. They threatened her with arrest if she did not cooperate and repeatedly pressured her by claiming she would face serious consequences.

Due to continuous intimidation, the doctor believed she was under official surveillance. During this period, the cyber criminals managed to cheat her out of more than Rs 12 lakh.

Following this, she filed a complaint against the fraudsters at the Rayagada police station along with the cyber cell. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and launched an investigation into the case, reports Sambad.

Cyber fraud cases targeting doctors are on the rise, with criminals using fear and intimidation to trap medical professionals. As a result, the police have advised the public to remain alert and not fall prey to threatening calls made in the name of law enforcement agencies.
