Doctor among 5 arrested in Kondhwa Mephedrone case, 108.51 gm seized
Pune: In a major crackdown on an alleged drug network in Kondhwa, police have arrested five people, including an MBBS doctor, and seized 108.51 grams of mephedrone, along with cash, mobile phones and other material worth around Rs 8.5 lakh.
The action began on September 17 after police received information about a suspected drug transaction near Green Lisbon Hotel in Kondhwa Khurd. A police team subsequently conducted a trap in the area and detained a suspect, from whom mephedrone and injection syringes were allegedly recovered.
Further investigation led police to additional suspects. Those arrested include a scrap dealer, a wireman, a businessman and an MBBS doctor. Police said the doctor is originally from Kashmir and currently resides in the Pisoli area.
A follow-up operation on September 18 led to the arrest of another accused. Police said 5 grams of mephedrone, estimated to be worth Rs 11,000, was recovered from him. This took the total quantity seized in the operation to 108.51 grams.
According to police, the overall seizure also included Rs 3,150 in cash, five mobile phones, a laptop, a tablet and injection syringes. Investigators are examining the electronic devices and other material to determine the nature and extent of the alleged drug network.
Police have also named another person as wanted in connection with the case and are conducting efforts to trace him.
A case has been registered at Kondhwa Police Station under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is being conducted by the Kondhwa police to establish the source of the mephedrone and determine the alleged role of each accused, as reported by Punekar News.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused were allegedly involved only in possession or whether the material was being distributed or sold through a wider network.
Police said the probe is continuing to identify other possible links and establish the source and movement of the seized contraband.
