Doctor serving remote Karnataka village dies after alleged delay in medical care

Doctor Who Treated Hundreds in Remote Village Dies After Emergency Delay
Karwar: In a tragic incident near the Karnataka-Goa border, a doctor who had dedicated his life to serving a remote village in Karnataka has died after reportedly not receiving timely medical assistance himself.
According to the news reports, the deceased, identified as Dr Lenvar Lobo, had been working in Diggi village of Joida taluk, a remote hamlet in the region, for the past three years. The village, located in a geographically difficult area, is known for limited healthcare facilities, poor connectivity, and inadequate transport infrastructure.

Dr. Lobo was working under an initiative run by a private organisation based in Sirsi. His efforts were widely appreciated, and people from nearby Goa also reportedly travelled to seek treatment from him.
As per Hans India, Dr. Lobo developed severe chest pain late at night. However, due to the absence of immediate transport facilities and poor mobile network connectivity, he could not reach a hospital in time. Arrangements were made early in the morning to shift him towards Joida for treatment, but his condition worsened during transit, and he passed away on the way.
The incident has left the local community in shock and grief. Villagers described Dr. Lobo as a compassionate and dedicated healthcare provider. His death has also highlighted the persistent gaps in emergency healthcare access in remote rural regions.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) recently found a city-based surgeon prima facie guilty of medical negligence in connection with the death of a 42-year-old patient. Taking disciplinary action, the council has directed the surgeon to submit his reply to the charges within three weeks of receiving the official notice. The case dates back to February 2, 2024, when a patient was admitted to a Clinic with acute abdominal pain.
