Doctors' body condemns alleged police assault on medicos during NEET 2026 protest

New Delhi: Following claims of alleged assault by police on several doctors who had reached the site of the NEET UG 2026 paper leak protest near Parliament to provide emergency medical care to injured students, a doctors' body strongly condemned the reported use of force against resident doctors and medical students.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) said that the visuals of injured doctors and the reported use of tear gas in the vicinity of a medical college were deeply disturbing, adding that violence against healthcare professionals under any circumstances was unacceptable.
Medical Dialogues recently reported that doctors claimed they were beaten despite informing security personnel that they were treating injured protesters and were not part of the demonstration.
The allegations surfaced a day after police used baton charges and tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters marching towards Parliament over the alleged NEET UG 2026 paper leak. The clashes reportedly left more than 50 students injured, while several doctors volunteering at the protest also sustained injuries, with some requiring stitches. In videos shared on social media, doctors described the alleged assault and accused the police of obstructing emergency medical care for the injured.

In a press release, FAIMA demanded accountability for any excessive use of force, assurance of the safety and dignity of all healthcare professionals and meaningful dialogue with the concerned stakeholders to ensure a peaceful resolution.
"FAIMA stands in complete solidarity with all affected resident doctors and medical students. Every healthcare professional has the right to work, learn, and peacefully express concerns without fear of violence. We appeal to all Resident Doctors' Associations across the country to remain united and stand together in support of our colleagues while ensuring that all demonstrations remain peaceful and disciplined. An injury to one doctor is an injury to the entire medical fraternity," the press note mentioned.
The association had earlier written to the Hon'ble Prime Minister and Her Excellency, the Hon'ble President of India, regarding the Paper leak concerns.
Commenting on this, Dr Jaideep Kumar Choudhary, National Chairman, FAIMA, told Medical Dialogues, "Seeing the disturbing visuals from yesterday's protest, it is really high time to ponder as a country- why the Government doesn't take any strong steps to check these frequent paper leaks and those who are asking for the answers from the Government which is actually answerable, is brutally thrashing the students and other protestors at the peaceful protest site. This country belongs to them as well. If the Government had wished, they could have had dialogues or held a press conference to ensure that they are listening and this wouldn't have invited such a large mass at the protest site. But right now, this seems to be escalating only after such a sad event of the lathi charge.
He further said, "Dialogue should be the solution, not violence. I also condemn the event of the lathi charge and Tear Gas used at the VMMC & SJH area and ask: How can tear gas be used in a medical centre, compromising patient safety and also the Healthcare Workers over there? How can they resort to a brutal Lathi charge and literally life-threatening assault on even doctors who were present over there, causing grievous injuries? We, the FAIMA, are standing firm with the Students who are fighting for their just demands of a FAIR EXAMINATION SYSTEM in NEET and other exams, and I also urge that the Delhi Police must ensure that no doctor or healthcare worker is harmed in any way."
