Doctors' body opposes contractual appointment of medical faculty in Haryana

Chandigarh: The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has urged the Haryana government to withdraw its move to recruit medical faculty on a contractual basis, stating that the move could undermine the quality and stability of medical education.
In a letter addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, the association called for regular, merit-based appointments instead.
No regular medical faculty has been appointed in Haryana for the last 4 years. Instead of filling long-pending vacancies through permanent recruitment, the government has opted for contractual appointments.

The association stated that medical education is the foundation of the country's healthcare system, and the quality of training provided to future doctors directly influences patient care and public health outcomes. According to FAIMA, appointing faculty on short-term contracts threatens the stability, accountability, and academic excellence essential for medical institutions.
“The contractual recruitment compromises the continuity and quality of medical education, leads to job insecurity, affecting faculty performance and commitment, discourages talented professionals from pursuing long-term academic careers, and weakens institutional integrity and research development,” the association said.
The association maintained that permanent appointments are essential to ensure sustained commitment to teaching, clinical care and research. It also said regular recruitment would strengthen institutional frameworks, improve academic mentorship and enhance research output while providing greater stability to the medical education system.
Calling for a reconsideration of the policy, FAIMA urged the Haryana government to initiate transparent, timely, and merit-based recruitment of medical faculty on a permanent basis in accordance with established norms.
The association also reiterated its solidarity with the medical fraternity, stating that it remains committed to safeguarding the standards of medical education and upholding the dignity of the medical profession.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao said that 195 specialist doctors will be recruited on a contractual basis in government hospitals to address the shortage of specialists across the state. She stated the recruitment process will be transparent and merit-based.
