Doctors suspend routine services at GMC Baramulla after assault in Gynaecology dept, demand police protection

Baramulla: Doctors and paramedical staff from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla were allegedly assaulted on July 18, prompting resident doctors to demand immediate action.
Following the incident, resident doctors submitted a formal representation to the Principal and Dean of GMC Baramulla, seeking legal action against the alleged attackers and stronger security arrangements within the hospital premises.
The doctors alleged that repeated incidents of physical assault, intimidation and threats by patients' attendants have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among resident doctors while performing their official duties.
"Doctors and healthcare workers cannot be expected to discharge their duties effectively in an environment where they remain under constant threat of violence and physical assault," the representation stated, adding that the existing security arrangements have proved inadequate, particularly in high-risk and round-the-clock service areas.
The resident doctors demanded the deployment of adequate police personnel on a 24x7 basis within the hospital, particularly in sensitive areas such as the Emergency Department, Labour Room, wards, intensive care units (ICUs) and other critical patient-care zones. They also sought immediate legal action against individuals involved in violence, threats or intimidation against healthcare professionals.
Expressing solidarity with their colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the resident doctors supported the suspension of routine and non-emergency services due to security concerns. However, emergency and life-saving services will continue to remain operational in the interest of critically ill patients.
The doctors said routine services would remain suspended until effective security measures, including deployment of police personnel, are put in place. They clarified that their demand was limited to ensuring a safe working environment where healthcare professionals could perform their duties without fear of violence.
In a recent post on X, Health activist and former Vice President of the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA), Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, expressed solidarity with the resident doctors and called for an immediate preservation and review of CCTV footage related to the incident.
Copies of the representation were also submitted to the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner of Baramulla, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla, and heads of concerned departments for necessary action.
The resident doctors have urged authorities to treat the matter as an urgent priority and take immediate steps to restore confidence among healthcare workers so that normal medical services can resume without disruption.
