Dr Anjum Farhana takes charge as principal of GMC Anantnag
Srinagar: Dr Anjum Farhana has taken charge as the principal of Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district by an official government order of the Health and Education Department issued on Wednesday.
The order was issued following the retirement of Prof Tariq Syed Qureshi on 31st July 2023. Dr Farhana is currently heading the Department of Microbiology at GMC Srinagar and has been assigned the new position in addition to her present duties.
The order, issued by Bhupinder Kumar, Secretary to the government, as per a media report in the Kashmir News Observer, stated, "Consequent upon the retirement of Prof Tariq Syed Qureshi, Incharge Principal, Government Medical College, Anantnag on 31.07.2023 (AN) and in the interest of administration and patient care, it is, hereby, ordered that Prof Anjum Farhana, Head Department of Microbiology in Government Medical College, Srinagar, shall, with immediate effect, hold the charge of the post of Principal, Government Medical College, Anantnag, in addition to her own duties, till the post is filled up on regular basis."
The new principal was welcomed by the medical faculty forum of the Anantnag GMC on Thursday under the leadership of its President Dr Azia Manzoor. Dr Azia was joined by the forum's vice president Dr Malik Shakir Hussain, General secretary Dr Sanjeet Singh Risam, Joint secretary Dr Mansoor Ahmad, treasurer Dr Shuaeb and Spokesperson Dr Showkat Hussain Tali, reveals a social media post of the forum.
The Government Medical College in Anantnag, established in 2019, is affiliated with the University of Kashmir and is recognized by National Medical Commission. Dr Farhana is the first woman principal of the college. It is one of the largest hospitals in Anantnag. The college offers 100 MBBS seats for its undergraduate medical course and additional nursing and paramedical courses.
