Dr Deepak Howale assumes charge as Medical College Dean at 45

Silvasa: Dr Deepak Sadashiv Howale, currently serving as Dean at Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education & Research (SMIMER), first assumed the role of Dean at a stage in his career that stands out when measured against typical timelines in Indian medical colleges.
According to official records, Dr. Deepak Sadashiv Howale, born on 24 May 1973, was appointed as a regular Dean at NAMO Medical College (Govt. Medical College), Silvassa, DNH, UT on 16 October 2018, when he was approximately 45 years and 5 months old at the time of appointment.
His service record shows he entered academic service as a Tutor in 2000, progressing through Assistant Professor in 2004, Associate Professor in 2009, and Professor in 2012 before becoming Dean. The 18-year progression from Tutor to Dean aligns with the minimum eligibility periods outlined in medical education regulations, provided promotions followed without significant interruption.
In Indian Government Medical Colleges, Deans are usually appointed after two decades or more of teaching and administrative experience, with many assuming the post in their early 50s or later. Appointments in the mid-40s are therefore less common. Dr. Howale’s appointment at 45 years and 5 months is noteworthy.
Dr Howale’s first Deanship was at the NAMO Medical Education & Research Institute in Silvassa, DNH, UT, where he played a key role in the institution’s establishment. He later joined SMIMER, Surat, where he continues to serve as Dean from 19th Feb. 2022. In that capacity, he also chairs the Medical Education Unit and the Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit, overseeing faculty development, curriculum implementation, and institutional research initiatives. He has been instrumental in the increase of MBBS seats & PG seats. He is keen to commence super-speciality services for the benefit of needy people of Surat city.
While his appointment is notably early by prevailing norms, a definitive claim that he is the youngest Dean in India cannot be substantiated. There is no publicly accessible database maintained by the National Medical Commission or other government bodies that records the dates of birth and appointment dates for all government medical college Deans nationwide. Dean appointments are managed independently by state governments, Directorates of Medical Education and Research, AIIMS institutions, and Union Territories, and many orders do not include age details. Without a comprehensive nationwide dataset, comparisons remain limited to publicly reported cases.
Based on the verifiable records available, Dr. Howale can be described as having assumed a medical college Deanship at an unusually young age and as being among the youngest appointees in medical colleges.
