Dr Sunita Sharma takes over as President of Dental Council of India

New Delhi: Dr Sunita Sharma has officially assumed the role of President of the Dental Council of India (DCI), succeeding Prof (Dr) Atul Goel. Her appointment comes as per a directive issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (Department of Health Services), Government of India.
The official announcement confirming her assumption of duties was made through a general circular issued by Secretary Incharge of Dental Council of India Mukesh Kumar on May 1, 2025.
“It is to inform that the Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (DE Section) vide its Order dated 24.02.2025 has ordered that the Director General of Health Services, Member of DCI as well as Member of the Executive Committee may discharge the functions of the President, DCI till the National Dental Commission is constituted or any other order issued to the said post, whichever is earlier,” stated the circular.
According to an order issued on April 15, 2025, Dr Sharma has been designated as Director General of Indian Health Services (DGIIS) on an officiating basis, effective from April 28, 2025. Alongside this responsibility, she has also taken over as the President of DCI from the same date. Dr Sharma, who currently serves as Director General of Health Services (DGHS) in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will hold the position of DCI President until the establishment of the National Dental Commission or until a new directive is issued regarding the post, whichever occurs earlier. Dr Sharma previously served as Additional DGHS under the Teaching Sub-Cadre of CHS. The ministry also stated that no extra salary or remuneration will be provided to Dr Sharma for taking on the additional responsibility on an officiating basis.
Accordingly, it is to inform the General Public that Dr Sunita Sharma, DGHS, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has taken over the charge of President, DCI w.e.f 28.04.2035 till the National Dental Commission is constituted or any other order issued to the said post, whichever is earlier, added the order.
Prof (Dr) Atul Goel, the Director-General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, officially assumed the role of President of DCI in February. The renowned orthodontist, Director and Consultant at FMS Dental Hospital, Dr Satheesh Kumar Reddy, was appointed as the President of the Dental Council of India (DCI) last year. Dr Reddy was promoted to Acting President following the completion of Dr Dibyendu Mazumder's tenure on November 28, 2024.
