Dr Vir Singh Negi Appointed Director of JIPMER Puducherry
Puducherry: Dr Vir Singh Negi has been appointed the new Director of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry. Prior to this, he served as the Executive Director of AIIMS Bilaspur on deputation.
Dr Negi will succeed Dr Gautam Roy, the current Director-in-charge, as announced by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday. According to a JIPMER administrative staff, the new Director is supposed to assume charge early next month. The ministry confirmed that the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved Dr. Negi’s appointment for a tenure of five years or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever is earlier, reports The Hindu.
Dr Negi has an extensive association with JIPMER, where he served for many years before moving to AIIMS Bilaspur on deputation four years ago. In 2008, he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Clinical Immunology Department at JIPMER, showcasing his expertise and leadership in the field.
Hailing from a remote village in the hills of Uttarakhand, Dr Vir Singh Negi completed his undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate (MD Medicine) from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, and super speciality DM (Clinical Immunology) training from SGPGIMS, Lucknow. He joined the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry as a faculty member. He was a Professor (senior scale) and Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology before joining AIIMS Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh as its founder Director.
Dr Negi is a pioneer in multiple fields of Medicine with many firsts in the country to his credit for which he was conferred, 'Dr. BC Roy National Award', the highest honour for Physicians in India. His achievements include the establishment of India’s first cell-based Immunotherapy facility for the diseases of the immune system and starting the first International Cotutelle (joint) PhD program in India which led to the signing of an MOU between the governments of India and France.
His brilliant career and contributions to the medical field have been recognized and felicitated by national and international scientific and medical societies by conferring their fellowships, orations, and awards. They include 'Indian Rheumatology Association Oration’ and ‘SS Agarwal Memorial Lecture’; Fellowships of the Royal College of Physicians, London, American College of Rheumatology, International Medical Science Academy, National Academy of Medical Sciences, India, and Indian College of Physicians.
Sanchari Chattopadhyay has pursued her M.A in English and Culture Studies from the University of Burdwan, West Bengal. She likes observing cultural specificities and exploring new places.
