Fake doctor arrested in Assam's Cachar after Health Department complaint

Silchar: In an ongoing crackdown on illegal medical practice, a man accused of posing as a doctor and allegedly treating patients without recognised medical qualifications was arrested from Bhaga Bazar in Assam's Cachar district following a complaint by the State Health Department.

According to the news reports, the accused was arrested on Saturday after a team from Dholai Police Station conducted a raid at his healthcare centre located in the Manipuri Market area of Bhaga Bazar. During the operation, police seized prescriptions, medicines, medical equipment, and several documents believed to be crucial for the investigation.

This is not the first case involving an alleged fake doctor in the region. Earlier this year, Cachar Police arrested another man for allegedly posing as an MBBS doctor and treating patients without possessing any recognised medical qualifications or medical training.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that in yet another case of quackery in the state, a fake doctor has been arrested by Cachar police for allegedly pretending to be an MBBS doctor without having any valid medical qualifications or training.

This police action followed an inspection carried out by a special Health Department team led by the Joint Director of Health Services, Cachar. During the inspection, the accused was reportedly treating patients and issuing prescriptions while presenting himself as a qualified doctor despite not possessing a recognised medical degree or legal authorisation to practise medicine.

The Health Department further alleged that the accused was neither registered with the State Medical Register nor the National Medical Register, yet had been claiming to be a medical practitioner and providing treatment to patients for a considerable period.

Following the inspection, the Joint Director of Health Services submitted a formal complaint requesting that an FIR be registered and appropriate legal action initiated against the accused. The complaint was accompanied by copies of prescriptions allegedly issued by the accused, his written statement and other documents collected during the departmental inquiry.

In its complaint, the health department stated that practising medicine without valid qualifications and registration constitutes a serious violation of the law and poses a significant threat to public health. The department urged police to take strict legal action to prevent any further alleged illegal medical practice and assured full cooperation during the investigation.

Speaking to Barak Bulletin, Officials said the inspection at Bhaga Bazar was part of the Health Department's ongoing drive against alleged fake medical practitioners. After the preliminary inquiry reportedly found substance in the allegations, the department formally requested police to register a case. Copies of the complaint have also been sent to the Cachar District Commissioner, the Superintendent of Police and the Director of Health Services, Assam.

Acting on the complaint, Dholai Police carried out the raid and arrested the accused. The arrest has generated considerable public interest in the area, with residents closely following the developments.

Police said the investigation is continuing, and the seized documents, prescriptions and other evidence are being analysed. Officials believe further details may emerge as the probe progresses.
