GMC Surat MD Microbiology medico allegedly commits suicide, 4 doctors suspended for ragging
Surat: In a tragic incident, a first-year postgraduate medical student in the department of microbiology at the Government Medical College (GMC), Surat, allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling in his PG hostel room.
It has been reported that the doctor was allegedly subjected to mental harassment and ragging by four senior doctors. After preliminary investigation, the college authorities suspended the four doctors for 6 months from the hospital, hostel, and all teaching activities.
The doctor had joined GMC Surat in February after securing admission to the MD Microbiology programme. As a first-year postgraduate student, he was assigned emergency duty at New Civil Hospital and was scheduled to be on duty on August 9.

When he did not report for duty, his colleague and others tried to contact him over the phone. However, he did not respond to their calls. They then went to his hostel room. After there was no response despite knocking on the door, they alerted the security personnel. The door was subsequently broken open, and he was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
As per the latest media report by TOI, a panel of doctors later conducted a forensic post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Following the incident, Gujarat Health Minister Praful Panseriya ordered an internal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. The inquiry was conducted under the supervision of Additional Director of Medical Education and Research Dr Jayesh Sachde. New Civil Hospital Superintendent Dr Parul Vadgama, GMC Surat Dean Dr Jayesh Brahmbhatt and other senior doctors are part of the inquiry committee.
The minister said that statements of students present at the college would be recorded and the inquiry report would be submitted within 24 hours. The inquiry also examined whether he faced ragging or harassment from senior doctors or professors.
The committee reportedly found evidence that the doctor had been mentally harassed and ragged by four senior resident doctors. Following the findings, the four senior doctors were suspended for six months from the hospital, the hostel, and all teaching and academic activities, reports Gujarat Samachar.
His father, who is also a doctor, told the media that his son had previously mentioned harassment by some seniors. They suspected that he took such an extreme step due to pressure or mental harassment from seniors, which proved true in the investigation.
The police have registered a case, and an investigation is underway.
