GMERS Medical College terminates 4 professors, faces backlash

Ahmedabad: Citing dereliction of duties as the cause, the Gujarat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) medical college in Gandhinagar dismissed four professors from their services, accusing them of neglecting their duties and leading to unsatisfactory departmental performance. The decision, however, has faced major backlash from the medical fraternity.
According to the latest TOI news report, the dismissed professors included two on temporary 12-month contracts and two in ad-hoc positions, one of whom was a female doctor.
The termination notices were issued on Thursday afternoon by the GMERS CEO. Officials from the institute stated that the dismissals were due to the professors' failure to meet departmental performance standards.

Strongly opposing the decision, the Teachers' Association stated that proper protocol was not maintained in issuing notices and seeking explanations before implementing such severe measures.
Before expressing agitation, the association discussed with the CEO, but to no avail. Following this, representatives from the association have now decided to meet with the Health Minister to discuss the matter. However, due to the minister's unavailability, the matter is scheduled for discussion next Monday after the holiday period.
TOI Sources within the medical community suggest that the current GMERS CEO struggles with managing staff performance effectively. Additionally, frequent leadership changes at the CEO level have contributed to operational challenges. The controversy surrounding these dismissals is expected to intensify in the coming period.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in a move to address unauthorised absences, the District Medical and Health Officer, Dr Narender Rathod, issued show-cause notices to five medical staff from Indervelli Primary Health Centre (PHC) for allegedly failing to obtain prior permission from authorities before taking leave.
