IMS BHU Surgery resident doctor attempts suicide with insulin overdose, critical

Suicide Attempt
Varanasi: A 25-year-old junior resident doctor from the General Surgery Department of Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (IMS BHU) is currently battling for life after allegedly injecting herself with insulin shots in an attempt to commit suicide.
As per media reports by Dainik Bhaskar, the doctor allegedly injected herself with over 100 insulin shots, which reportedly pushed her into a coma. She has been intubated and is currently in critical condition.
According to social media posts, the doctor is a first-year postgraduate student and allegedly took the extreme step due to toxicity in the department.

The incident came to light on Friday night when one of her friends repeatedly tried to contact her but received no response. Worried about her, the friend went to the doctor’s rented accommodation near Samne Ghat.
As the door was locked from inside and there was no response despite repeated knocking, the friend informed the police. After reaching the spot and receiving no reply from inside, the police broke open the door and found the doctor lying unconscious.
She was immediately rushed to the trauma centre and later shifted to the ICU of the Super Speciality Block at Banaras Hindu University for further treatment.
Doctors attending to her said that a large insulin overdose can severely affect the kidneys, and therefore dialysis had to be performed. At present, the doctor has been kept on ventilator support and remains under close medical observation.
Confirming the development, S. N. Sankhwar, Director of the Institute of Medical Sciences at BHU, told Dainik Bhaskar, "The doctor has been kept on ventilator support. Her family members have been informed. A team of doctors is continuously monitoring her condition. The exact reason will be known only after she regains consciousness."
Sharing the incident on 'X', Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of Indian Medical Association Junior Doctors Network posted "Why resident doctors suicide is becoming an silent epidemic in India? Today, my inbox received another case of a suicidal attempt by a doctor, the 5th such case in a month. The so-called top college where people flaunt the society they got admission and later witness how it’s turning into a "slow poison of societal Success" The 19 century old monk mindset of "This is how you will become a good doctor" still persists."
