Indian-origin doctor jailed for secretly recording women in US hospital restrooms

Ohio: In a shocking incident, an Indian-origin doctor in Toledo, Ohio, has been sentenced to six months in jail after admitting to secretly recording women in employee restrooms at Toledo Hospital.

As per the news reports, the accused, a former medical resident, was sentenced in June after pleading guilty to one count of attempted tampering with evidence and seven counts of voyeurism. Along with the jail term, Judge Michael Goulding ordered him to complete three years of probation, register as a sex offender for 15 years, attend Sexaholics Anonymous meetings, and continue sex offender and mental health treatment.

During the hearing, the court was informed that the doctor plans to move to Franklin County, Ohio. However, the judge said he would still be required to comply with all legal conditions, including treatment requirements and sex offender registration, in the new county.

Before the sentencing, the doctor apologised to the victims. His attorney requested that the court consider probation instead of jail time, arguing that he had been undergoing therapy and working to understand the behaviour that led to the offences.

However, one of the victims described the lasting emotional impact of the incident during the court hearing. An employee at Toledo Hospital told the judge that she continues to check bathrooms for hidden cameras and remains distressed over the uncertainty surrounding the images recorded without her consent. “Not knowing what was done with the photos is enough to keep me up at night,” she said. “As we all know, nothing is truly ever deleted.”

She said her trauma continued as investigators, attorneys and others involved in the case viewed those images, leaving her uncertain about how many people had seen them.

The case surfaced in June 2025 after a hospital employee discovered a cellphone concealed inside a box in a unisex restroom at Toledo Hospital’s Renaissance Tower. Prosecutors said that when a witness attempted to remove the device, the doctor allegedly took it and claimed that it belonged to him.

A joint investigation by ProMedica and Toledo Police later found 82 images on the phone that had been recorded between February and May 2025. Investigators identified six women who had been recorded without their consent.

Authorities said the investigation was ongoing to determine whether more individuals may have been affected.

At the time of the offences, the doctor was a third-year University of Toledo medical resident specialising in endourology and urologic oncology. The University of Toledo said he was placed on administrative leave after the device was discovered and that his residency appointment was not renewed following an internal investigation, reports TOI.
