JnK doctor cheated of Rs 2.7 crore by man posing as IAS Officer

Bengaluru: A doctor from Jammu & Kashmir was allegedly duped of Rs 2.7 crore by a Bengaluru man posing as an IAS officer in a fraudulent land deal near the city’s international airport, police said.

According to the news reports, the accused, a 44-year-old resident of RPC Layout in Bengaluru, has been named in a chargesheet recently filed in a city court. He was arrested in November 2025 following a complaint by the doctor, who accused him of cheating his family under the pretext of facilitating a land purchase near the Kempegowda International Airport.

Speaking to TOI, police said the accused convinced the doctor he would help his family buy land near KIA and collected money in two instalments for land-related clearances. With no progress and the accused avoiding him, the doctor approached the cops. Three more suspects, including a seer, were named in the case. Owing to a lack of evidence, police dropped their names from the chargesheet.

In his complaint, the doctor stated that the accused visited Jammu in March 2023 and persuaded his father to invest in the land deal. The family initially transferred Rs 1.5 crore to a Company owned by the accused, who promised to provide land documents within a week.

"Instead, the accused started offering my father plum positions in the Centre and state, calling himself a well-connected person holding a high position in the central govt. He changed the proposal to ‘heritage homes', stating the title papers would be given only after the construction of these homes. He demanded Rs 1.2 crore as the construction amount. As we had already spent Rs 1.5 crore and were scared of losing it, we paid the additional amount. After receiving a total of Rs 2.7 crore, he mostly stopped responding. A while later, he replied that the deal would not happen, and he would return the money," Dr Langer stated in his complaint, reports TOI.

During the investigation, police recovered forged materials from the accused, including seals of the Ministry of Home Affairs and a fake letterhead of the Karnataka Governor’s office. Officials confirmed that the accused had no association with them, prompting a separate case over the forged documents.

Police said the preliminary chargesheet details how the accused befriended and cheated the doctor. Claims regarding his alleged impersonation of an IAS officer or central government official are still under verification, pending responses from the concerned authorities.
