Kalyan orthopaedic consultant leaves Mumbai with family after alleged assault

Mumbai: Following an alleged assault by a patient’s son inside a hospital in Kalyan East, a 41-year-old orthopaedic consultant has switched off his phone, taken a break from work and left Mumbai with his family on Monday.
The doctor, who consults at Bhanujyot Hospital, said the incident had left him and his family deeply distressed. He also alleged that police initially refused to register an FIR and claimed two men threatened him at the police station after he decided to pursue the case.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that just a few weeks after the attack on two doctors at a Dombivli civic hospital, another alleged assault on a doctor has surfaced in Maharashtra. At Bhanujyot Hospital in Kalyan, an orthopaedic consultant was allegedly verbally abused and assaulted by a patient's son.
Speaking to the Indian Express, the doctor said that he had stepped away particularly because of the distress caused to his elderly parents after they saw video of the assault on news channels. “My parents are quite stressed after seeing the CCTV footage. It is embarrassing for them to see their son being assaulted. When something like this happens, it shakes up our faith in humanity,” he said. His father has hypotensive blood pressure, and his mother was discharged from the hospital 10 days ago after treatment for pneumonia.
According to the doctor, the incident occurred around 10.45 pm when a patient, aged around 60-70, visited the hospital with lower back pain. During the consultation, the patient’s son allegedly repeatedly interrupted and abused the doctor.
He alleged that despite being asked by his father to behave or wait outside, the accused continued to abuse him from the doorway. The doctor claimed that the accused then approached him aggressively, punched him in the face and stomach, and held him by the neck.
Following the incident, the doctor, accompanied by hospital staff and members of the Kalyan medical association, went to Kolsewadi police station around 1.30 am to lodge a complaint.
He alleged that police initially refused to register an FIR. A case was subsequently registered against the accused under Sections 118(1), 115(2), 352 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused has not been arrested so far.
Kalyan ACP Suhas Hemade said the accused had spoken rudely and abused the doctor while claiming that the medication was not working, following which a scuffle broke out, reports India Today.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety and security of doctors and healthcare workers inside hospitals.
