KEM doctor duped of Rs 1.40 lakh after ordering food online
Mumbai: In yet another fraud case reported in the city, a complaint has been lodged against a fraudster for allegedly duping a 27-year-old doctor of civic-run KEM hospital in Mumbai of Rs 1.40 lakh after he ordered 25 plates of samosas from a popular eatery in Sion, a police official said on Monday.
Following the complaint, a case was registered at Bhoiwada police station under Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act provisions.
The incident took place on Saturday between 8.30 am to 10.30 am, the official said.

“The victim and his colleagues had planned a picnic at Karjat and had ordered samosas for the journey. He placed the order after locating the eatery’s number online. When he called on the number, the one who answered asked him to pay Rs 1,500 in advance,” he said.
Due to the fraudster impersonating the staff of the hotel, the doctor believed him and started following his instructions. Along with asking the doctor to pay the amount for the 25 plates of samosas in advance, the fraudster also asked him to provide the details of the transaction on WhatsApp.
“The doctor then received a Whatsapp message, which had confirmation of the order and also a bank account number to send money online. The doctor sent Rs 1,500. The man at the other end said the doctor had to create a transaction ID for the payment. While following instruction to create one, he first lost Rs 28,807 and subsequently Rs 1.40 lakh cumulatively,” the official added.
Upon hearing from the doctor that he did not want online transactions and will come to the hotel to talk to them, the fraudster immediately hung up the phone which made the doctor suspicious.
After trying several times, the doctor was unable to reach the person and decided to inform the police. He immediately filed a complaint with the Bhoiwada police. The police have asked the bank for information about the bank accounts to which the amount was transferred.
Presently, an investigation is underway to nab the fraudster.
