KNRUHS VC Row: Doctors oppose Govt plan to appoint IAS officer as Vice Chancellor

Hyderabad: Nearly five days after reports emerged that the Vice-Chancellor of Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) resigned amid allegations of gross discrepancies and irregularities in the evaluation process of the postgraduate (MD/MS) theory exams, the Telangana government is now planning to appoint an IAS officer as the new Vice Chancellor.
Doctors in Telangana have strongly opposed this move, stating that the post must be filled by a qualified senior doctor, as health universities in the country have traditionally been headed by medical professionals.
The Telangana Government Doctors Association (TGGDA), which represents government doctors, expressed serious concern over the government’s plan. The association noted that health universities across the country have always been led by eminent medical experts, and changing this practice could negatively affect medical education, academic standards, and the autonomy of institutions.

"It is unfortunate and disappointing that despite Telangana State having many honest, capable, and academically distinguished doctors, such deserving professionals are being overlooked. The State has numerous senior doctors with integrity, teaching excellence, and proven administrative experience who can lead KNRUHS transparently and effectively," the TGGDA said in a press release as reported by Telangana Today.
The association has urged the State Government to uphold fairness and ensure that the VC post is given to a doctor, safeguarding the credibility of health universities and the future of medical education in Telangana.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that several final-year MD and MS students from government and private medical colleges under KNRUHS raised concerns about the evaluation process after many students reportedly failed by a narrow margin. The agitation by the students intensified after the Vice Chancellor of KNRUHS, Dr. PV Nanda Kumar Reddy, resigned from the post.
The students claimed that there were gross discrepancies and irregularities in the evaluation process of the postgraduate (MD/MS) theory examinations held between October 7 and October 15. Such allegations have also been brought against the practical exams held between October 25 and October 30. After the exams, the results were declared on November 4.
